Persecution

Persecution

A Poem by lrigD
"

A poem about the shoah...

"
Old habits have fought their way
Into your modern life
Old traditions have sought a way
Within you and your wife

Your lives are happy and filled with joy
Nothing can tear you apart
Love will be the key
Which leads to your heart

Fears start to rise in you
When strangers enter your land
When enemies turn your world upside down
And you start to understand

That you shouldn't have been so careless
That your people had never been free
That your life would fall away
And you could do nothing but plea

The day comes when you're led away
Separated from your love
Stuffed in trains and transported east
To your new life, or lack thereof

The hour comes in which you desperately
Try to escape from all the pain
Look for a way to get away from it all
To break through the chain

The minute comes when you want to leave
More so than ever before
The emotions become too much
You can take it no more

And when you finally throw yourself
With the aim to die
It is of your wife you think
And what some will later deny.

Comments are greatly appreciated. Did the rhyming pattern came across as a bit forced? What do you think of the subject? This is quite a sensitive subject for me, so I'd appreciate hearing other people's opinions.

Rhyming can sometimes come over as forced by its very nature, but you manage to hold on to the serious subject of the Holocaust without lessening the impact.
