Dark Room

Dark Room

A Poem by Alma W. Reis

Answering to your midnight prayers are shadows,
keeping you from well deserved peace of mind.
They're everywhere. That is why I keep away from mirrors.
Frantic eyes search the darkness until I go blind.
They're singing outside. I can hear them in the wind.
Making me believe my soul is one that has sinned.

Morning is waiting under the blackened hills.
Soon I will rest, soon I will feel light on my skin.
They will fade, ceasing to be the shadow that kills,
to become the familiar itch, scaring away within.
