Sally in the WoodsA Poem by Scarlett BrookeSally seeks advice from the Wolf."Hello
Mr. Wolf, what brings you this way? The
sun's settling down and the sky's turning grey.
The
winds are howling, I can hear the trees hum, They're
singing of night's wicked creatures to come."
"Don't
you know Sally? This is the best time of day, When
beasts come out and the night comes to play.
It's
time to run wild and dance with the wolves, Or
are you too frightened, just a girl in the woods?"
"You
see Mr. Wolf, you have me confused. Your
words are wise, but you're clearly amused,
I
don't ever know whether to laugh or to run. You
have my perspective completely undone."
But
the siren song called her name, And
she listened gently to the rhythmic rain.
Pittering,
pattering into a mesmeric trance, That
possessed Sally's bones to begin to dance.
And
then one by one, they joined her, The
beasts of night, the old myths of yore.
They
swayed their bodies beneath the moon, Knowing
too well it would all end too soon.
She
danced that night and she fell in love, With
those of whom not spoken of.
But
it was the wolf that made her stop, To
ask for words she deeply sought.
"They
say Mr. Wolf, you are rather twisted, While
others are nice, you’re just so wicked.
Yet
when there's trouble affront you intervene, When
the kindness they show is sometimes just mean."
"You
don't always find your answers in friends, You
don't always find them in happy ends.
Sometimes
you find them in unlikely places,
Sally
then smiled, for she understood, What
is was to be a girl in the woods.
That
even in darkness she's never alone, And
she knew it was finally time to go home.
