Trying to maintain a relationship with Mother EarthA Poem by Gretchen FontaineThis is a poem I wrote earlier this year when the earth's winter coat was beginning to melt. The world shivers under a thin blanket of ice. Even in the city you can hear it. The trees and power lines crackle in the wind and I know they crave the sun as much as I.
The gusts blow sheets of frozen water to the ground with a shatter. It's beautiful in its own way, and I've never noticed it before. Strangely, it reminds me of the coming spring. The trees are shedding their winter coats.
As I walk quietly through this constant hum of noise I listen for hints of nature Most folks overlook it, only glimpsing at the world they experience daily But not I.
I hear our mother earth stretch and whisper in a calm and loving voice, “It's time for spring” For she is a mother, and loves us still. © 2012 Gretchen FontaineAuthor's Note
