Black Horses

Black Horses

A Poem by John Anthony Fingleton

We rode out on black horses,
Into the dark;
Each colour a devolving embrace,
No one recognised us,
With the dust from the hooves
And the silk masks that covered our face;
If the enemy saw us "
Perhaps they thought we were ghosts?
For we left a white shadow behind,
The last thing they expected,
Was to still find me here,
I’d had been gone, a very long time;

It was you, who remained in the castle alone,
While I was away in lost wars-
Now was the time to repay your strong hand,
And ride out together, as we had done before.

"For we left a white shadow behind".... I like that line. Very well written! I remember one of my cousins letting me ride on her horse,of course she was behind me on the same horse making sure I could control her baby.
