Chapter 4A Chapter by Mariah McintyreMaking my way past the camp limits I explored the foresty area around me. The trees were tall and crooked as they stretched out over me shading the trail I followed and making strands of light dance before me. The air was warm with only the slightest hint of a breeze and even that was heated from the sun.
I let my feet drag behind me as I hummed and breathed in fresh air my mind slipping away again. If I were in a grassy field I would surely lay down for a nap, but instead I glidded on through this magical place where everything seemed to slip away with the time.
Ahead I could see where the path opened up into a clearing. The sun's light embraced me as I stepped out of the trees grinning at the sight before me. The brush surrounded a small, open lake, its glassy surface reflecting the blue sky above with puffy white clouds spotted across it's vast length. Letting my feet slip out of my shoes and socks I trailed my toe across the water watching as the ripples grow and spread all the way to it's oppostie edge.
After glancing around to be sure I was alone, I took off the rest of my clothes leaving me in only my bathing suit. I smiled to myself, glad that I had decided to wear it beneath my clothes. I let my foot drop into the lake and felt the squishy mud at the bottom that seemed to sqeeze between every crevase in my foot making me almost jump right back out.
Instead I relaxed and let the cool water persuade me into continuing. I let my other foot fall into the lake, this time the mudds texutre leaving me less discusted, and impulsively dived into the lakes depths.
The water was cool and crisp waking me up from the daze I had been in before. The deeper I got the colder the water was and afraid of hitting the bottom I shot back up out of the water breaking the surface and letting the warm light hit me yet again. My hair was slicked back and my face felt clean against the sun as I now floated on my back taking in a deep breathe of contentment.
Then suddenly I began to feel waves of water hit me from the shore. I stumbled up and saw a group of kids all making their way into the lake.
Embaressed I sped out of the water and onto the shore where I grabbed my clothes and ran away hoping nobody had noticed me. It only took a few minutes for my bathing suit to dry so sitting on a stump off the trail I began to dress myself.
That's when I realized that I had left my shoes behind.
"Dangitt." I said frustrated. I didn't want to have to go all the way back, but I didn't want to just leave them there ether. Luckily just as I had turned to retreive them someone came running up with them grasped in their hand.
"Hey I think you forgot these." The tall boy said. He was the same boy from the group I had first noticed. I remembered his messy brown locks and beautiful green eyes which seemed to shine more brightly with the afternoon sun.
"Thanks, I was just about to go get them." I sighed taking them and slipping them on easily.
"Guess I have pretty good timing." His face spread showing his dazzling smile, stunning me for a moment. "Why'd you leave anyway?" This brought me back. "Well..." I stuttered, "I don't know, I guess I was just surprised." I felt my face growing hot again.
"Sorry if we snuck up on you. Jaque insisted that we find out where you were going and when we spotted the lake, well we just couldn't resist." I now acknowledged his hair still slightly damp and his shirt sticking to his chest. My face grew hotter.
"Oh, it's ok." I tried to look away as to make it less obvious but he curled around just to look at me clearly.
"I didn't mean to embaress you." He said hinting at my red complexion.
"It's alright." I brushed the hair out of my face and rocked my body in the other direction to leave. "You better get back to your friends, I'm sure they're wondering where you are." But before I could leave he was by my side walking with me back to camp.
"They won't mind. Plus the mud at the bottom of the lake was revolting!" He chuckled.
"I know! Gave me chills to even touch it!" I exclaimed excitedly, making him laugh more.
"So you've been there before?" He asked.
"No, just found it. Pretty lucky I think, especially since I've never even been to this camp before."
He looked at me curiously. "Seriously. I mean I've been here tons of times before and never found any cool places like that."
We were walking slowly, shuffling our feet as we made convorsation and it was then I realized exactly what was going on. I was talking to this boy, alone in the woods of a camp... all alone. He even left his friends to be with me. But why?
"Maybe you were just never looking."
"Yeah. All we ever did was play pool and spin the bottle. Both got boring quick. Atleast to me and the guys. The girls still try and get us to play that game." He shook his head at this.
"So who are your friends anyway? I know the girl Chelsea, she seems pretty nice."
"Yeah she is probably the nicest of the group." He nodded thinking. "My two best friends are Max and Donny, the blonde and the Mexican. They are one hell of a pair, and the other girls are Isabella, Michelle and Jaque. Isabella is the girl with dark hair while Michelle and Jaque are the brunettes."
I mustered all my confidence and asked sarcastically, "And who exactly are you?" This brought back his blinding smile.
"I'm Justin, the brown haired beach bum." I giggled at this. He sounded way better than the rest of them. I wonder if he planned that. "And you are?" He added politely.
"I'm Tayler... the blonde haired, red-faced, day dreamer."
"Nice to meet you Tayler." He said stuffing his hands in his pockets and staring at me happily.
"Nice to meet you." © 2009 Mariah Mcintyre |
