haka of hope....

haka of hope....

A Poem by Brad
"

a nod to my maori heritage....

"

before...

like in any story of beginnings

there was darkness

no light to give warmth

give comfort

only the cold

desperate darkness

an empty spot in my chest

then

from deep inside

i heard it

the call of the tipuna

the ancestral spirit call

"Aha ha!
Ka Mate! Ka Mate!
Ka ora! Ka ora!
Tenei te tangata puhuruhuru
Nana nei i tiki mai whakawhiti te ra!
Hupane kaupane!
Hupane kaupane
Whiti te ra!
"

and inside the warrior rises

nostril's flared

tongue out

and the strength of many

who have fallen before

is in my body

There is still

the darkness of desperation

but i am a thousand warriors

in one

and together

we will bring back the dawn...

Author's Note

Brad
before battle, the maori toa (warriors) would stand in a line and do the haka, it is a prepatory dance where they would pull the mana (strength) of our ancestors into their body before a fight. you can see a modern version of this whenever the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team play.
