A Poem by Brad
"

reflection

"

captured

like prisoners

in a 5 x 7 cage

forever stained

in the recesses

of that self-sadistic

scrapbook

snaps of laughter

that only echo ghostly in my mind

snaps of weddings long dead

of family security

now ripped apart

photos should make you smile

and savor the memory

you shared

but pictures make me cry

over the loss

of once happy times

and when i'm old

sharing oxygen

with a metal cannister

my album

will be filled with dead people

and regrets...

I love the concept of a photograph being a prison. I also loved the part of the narrator sharing the oxygen with the metal cannister- shows a somewhat cold and sterile solitude. Have you heard of or seen memento mori photographs? That was brought to mind with "will be filled with dead people."

As for the scrap-book, why don't you show us it's self-sadistic? Perhaps it's overly decorated or has some sort of self-righteous pattern on its design. You could even sprinkle sadistic at the end, but I'd like imagery showing me. That also goes to "but pictures make me cry." Perhaps describe a specific picture. Sometimes old and cracked pictures evoke melancholy. And I think you could do without the last line...well the word "regrets" really. Seems like an easy way to end it.

I really do hope this helps :)

yes, those of us who still had things to learn, would do well to let the picture go; it's enough they're captive in our hearts
