Lost in the Fire

Lost in the Fire

A Poem by Carlos Lorenzo Estrada
"

Hate is a powerful emotion and one that can be very infectious. Any sense of decency or common sense can fall to its pernicious nature.

Lost in the Fire

By

Carlos Lorenzo Estrada

I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.- James Baldwin

I burn

No fires

Can claim me

Immolation deserved

Incinerated vaporous embers

Inflamed upon societal indifference

Smoldering ashen pile devoid of my color

Hatred paints flame in starlight sunsets auburn

In the cinders grey my oppressors and I are equal tinge

Dust to dust we find commonality in our bigoted destruction

Do not weep upon the bonfires of our self inflicted annihilation

For in the ash bares a pestilence of infectious acrimonious rancor

Let peaceful wind claim us so that our ideologies are lost to history forever

Only when the last of us is finally consumed by flame will hate be lost in the fire

Author's Note

Carlos Lorenzo Estrada
When I wrote this a few weeks back it was about 95 degrees outside and I was complaining to my muse about the unbearable weather. And she replied, again in a very sensual Cate Blanchett voice, "You don't know what hot is so quit your bitching and write this down." And being her submissive I did exactly as I was told. Because honestly what sane man would ever argue with a woman, especially Cate. Feel free to leave thoughts, comment, or even troll. And thank you to both friend and foe.

I've never heard the quote you used before at the very top, but I love it because of how true it is, and as you read on, it all blends and makes sense! It works beautifully together. We find comfort in our pain after a while, and then want many to just pity us. Needing help is one thing, but never trying to pull yourself out of anger only ends horribly, and just like you said, a fire. It perishes and burns you and the wisdom in your words is brilliant! Each word and line is perfectly fitting. And, I have to say, your muse sounds absolutely amazing! She sounds like a fierce fireball.

This reminds me of what CG Jung said about "differentiation." To feel like we really exist we need to separate ourselves from our parents as part of our psychological development. Collectively, hating others can serve that purpose, too: we exist, we are different. So, it's a rebellious child's attempt at finding an identity.

I love the relationship you describe in Author's Note. It's poetic that the hot weather (which I hate too) inspired this poem about hate being a fire. My favorite line was: "Do not weep upon the bonfires of our self inflicted annihilation".

Powerful stanzas here Carlos. Hate is a strong word. Not one that I am familiar with when it comes to my own emotions. You paint it in fiery colour here. You make it look splendid, and yet we all know how destructive it can be. I much prefer the ashes left I think, cooling, calm and more peaceful. Great work.

yes, once hate is gone...sometimes we have no reason to go on...we don't know love enough...
and sometimes it is too scary to love....less scary to feel the opposite.

I love that you paint hate in vibrant splashy colors, instead of bleak like most writers do. Hate is bright & attractive & irresistible . . . look at how many people it inspires & attracts. Your poem makes me feel sad that there's no way to combat this scourge. It's way more persuasive & addictive than love (((HUGS)))

It is so horrific to live with people who inflict their self hate on others, not only in this country but around the world……thinking that self immolation will send them to their God….in this country we have many hate groups that are pulling our democracy apart. .and I, for one, cannot see an end to this in my lifetime. What these groups do is put fear in us. I do not weep for them, even in death, they deserve whatever justice brings.
Great piece Carlos

Powerful piece on hatred indeed. I agree with John the Baptist " As long as self hatred exists, it will projectile outwards to others" The unfortunate part about it is that hatred is apart of our nature. Regardless if we like it or not. We can only imagine a world of peace and harmony with no hatred at all.
