(An American Horror Story)

Monday

"It's bullshit!  All of it is fake news. Don't believe any of their crap.  It's the deep state.

This is America, God damn it!  We're a Christian nation.  You can't take away my God

Given right to freedom!  They can't force me to wear a mask for something that's not

real.  Look here, this is the real American flag."  At this point Mr. Harvik raised the 

Confederate flag waving it with a near rabid joy.  His lack of civility and ignorance

was very telling.

Tuesday

"Damn straight I went to the rally!  Those are God damn American patriots there. We 

love America!  Open your eyes, man.  Don't believe any crap from the fake news and

Socialist dumb-o-crats.  They're a bunch of pedophile baby eaters!  And the whole

Media is in on it!"  At this point Mr. Harvik began to cough uncontrollably as beads of 

sweat visibly covered his forehead.

Wednesday

"How many times I gotta keep telling you media types it's all fake news...'cough..cough'

There is no virus!  And even if there is it ain't more dangerous...'cough'..then the flu. A

Matter of fact this is the China flu!  But it ain't as bad as you folks make it...'cough'...

out to be.  We're Americans and they're ain't no disease from China that can kill us.  So

stop...'cough...cough'... spreading damn lies."  At this point during the interview Mr. Harvik 

began to cough more incessantly and we found it prudent to stop recording.  Later in the

night we would receive word he had been rushed to Monterey County General for

observation and testing.

Thursday

"I ain't got that God damn virus!  It's just a touch of pneumonia.  I been sick like this

before and this ain't no different then...'cough..cough..cough..cough'...any other time

I tell you.  They ain't gonna take away my rights.  Even if I am sick with it I ain't wearing 

no damn mask!  So go and take all your liberal socialist agenda and shove it right

up your a*s!  'cough..cough..cough' Go bother those illegal border hoppers who

are bringing worse diseases into my country!"  At this point during the phone interview 

Mr. Harvik began spouting belligerent racist epitaph which we found too offensive to 

print.

Friday

We received word Mr. Gerald Harvik passed away at 4:49 am after being placed on a 

ventilator late afternoon the previous day.  Dr. Amel Cortez reported that the patient's 

final words were..."This isn't real...someone tell me the God damn truth!!"

Thank you for reading this short Horror Story. It truly is a shame it is more fact than fiction.

A part of me says, "Hell, yes! Allow covid to wipe out all the Gerald Harviks in the world!" The problem with that, of course, is that the damned fools will take unknown numbers of innocents with them. You make your point exceedingly well, my friend.

Thank you, Samuel, for your comment. You are absolutely correct and that is the tragic dilemma we face as a nation. We can't allow ourselves to become indifferent to these needless deaths. In the end it is not a question of Democrat or Republican but of humanity. Most people who are part of a cult don't realize they are in one. We have to continue to appeal to their humanity. The other night I watched a documentary about the influence of nazis thought on the German people who are still living from that era. Many in their 80s couldn't believe how easily they were taken in by the ideology and some still felt it wasn't that bad. They would sing old hymns that spoke prideful of being a part of the Hitler youth or of harming Jewish people. And they would sing them with almost smiles on their faces. It was harrowing that even after all these years some of that vile thought still permeates their society. It had me asking are we no different? We are not unless we fail to recognize and address the issues with the immediacy they require. Empathy has to be our shield against hate. When we take joy in their deaths and destruction we lose a piece of our own humanity with them. Then it truly becomes an American tragedy. Thank you again my friend.

Thanks Matt. I did intentionally go a bit overboard on the irony aspect of this story, though I believe it may not differ too much from actual events. This is a horror story that could easily be turned into a comedy skit from Dave Chapelle. My favorite parts are the ironic title of the piece and also this part: "This is America, God damn it! We're a Christian nation." I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have heard an actual Christian say that. Believe me when I say I don't judge, but I do laugh. Thank you again my friend.

I think the portrayal is spot on. Its the evangelist behavior of regurgitating. It reminds me of the scene where Pinocchio is duped into performing for someone else's profit, and the song he sings is "There Ain't No Strings On Me". Great irony.
