Chapter 3A Chapter by Lorena RoseThe doctors went through all of their tests again then when Morrison started throwing a fit, I got set back to my room. For the next week, I saw Seth twice in total and they were both painful experiences seeing him like that. To see someone so alive be turned into one of those yes men was horrible. I found seeing him like that more painfully then the injections they kept modifying and trying to use on me. My body regretted it though and so did my mind. On the last day of the week, Morrison had just been unsuccessful again when my brother came into the room. “Did it work this time?” Cass said and Morrison threw a blood bag across the room, “Sir, I know you don't want her damaged, but I could teach her a lesson or maybe we could use a truth serum to gather information.” “Very good,” Morrison took a deep breath, “Take her back to her room, give her the truth serum I will follow in a few moments.” “Yes sir,” Cass pulled me to my feet and dragged me out of the room. “Don't even try to fight the truth serum, Maya,” Peck warned then my brother rounded the corner. “You're being stubborn, sister,” my brother's grip on my arm was tight enough to cut off circulation, “Just let the serum take its course, Morrison will not give up, you're just being childish about this.” “I know whose side I am on, Cass,” I retorted, “I did not come back to be Morrison's science project to show all of his friends and enemies.” “Well that's too bad because that's what you're going to be, May,” Cass remarked shooting me with the truth serum, “A project, a pet that he will use when it's needed and put in storage when he does need it.” “I think you're just bitter because he only keeps you around because of me, I may be stubborn, but at least I am still human unlike you,” I replied then he shoved me into my room. “I am going to get a drink, you will stay in here or else,” he slammed the door shut and locked it from the outside. “I hate you, you b*****d,” I banged on the door. “Keep it up, freak,” he snarled back. “Mom and dad would never forgive you for doing this, you'll never see them again, I'll never see them again because you're a selfish, egotistical, self-righteous a*****e,” I shouted through the door. “You're the one that killed them, Maya I tried to convince them to stay on the right side, but with all your crying and whimpering they lost their minds,” he countered, “You are a waste of talent, a s**t and a...” I heard something hard hit the door then I heard jingling keys. “What kind of game are you playing?” I said then heard something drop behind me. I turned around to see a girl I recognized. “Caroline,” I frowned, “What are you doing here?” “Wait for me,” Eliot hopped down. I could help, but smile seeing the girl who could control plants and the boy who could create earthquakes. “We're here for you,” a voice said and the door opened to reveal a guy with familiar brown eyes and I watched Sara's face return to its original form. “Maya,” she stepped forward and hugged me. “Sara,” I embraced her automatically. “I cannot believe you're alive, we heard about the new afflicted they were trying to change,” she said, “When reports said that the person was rejecting the serum, fighting it we knew it was you so here we are.” “Darren,” I muttered, “Is he here?” “He stayed with Nora at the camp,” the guy said and I looked at him. “You're Max Peck, aren't you?” I looked up at him. “You know my little brother,” he nodded, “When I heard about Seth, I left the practice and started acting as an insider for the cause.” “Good to know,” I said. “Come on,” Sara took my hand and we hurried out of the room, “We have mist behind us and vines blocking all, but one of the exits.” “That explains the nose bleed,” I saw Caroline's red nostrils. “It's worth it,” she assured me then officers stepped into our path. “Miss. Garnet, return to your room and the rest of you come with us,” they raised their guns. “Not happening,” I said then I saw them come at me. I knocked them out of my way moving quicker than I ever had before. Once they were done, Caroline kept them down with vines. “Don't overdo it,” I told her then we kept running until we reached the hallway with the exit. As soon as we entered though, we were thrown into the wall behind us. “Children,” Morrison came around the corner and I saw Jemma, Seth and a boy I didn't recognize at the end of the hall with him. “Where did you think you were going?” he looked at me. “Out of here,” I answered automatically. I hated this damn truth serum. “You belong here, Miss. Garnet,” Jemma did not sound like herself. “You will join us,” the other boy continued. “Seth, go collect those children and Maxwell you should be ashamed of yourself,” Morrison commanded and Seth stepped forward. I was surprised when I felt a voice in my head. “Come to me,” Seth's soothing voice said and I stepped forward one step. “Max,” a voice snapped me right out of it and I got out of the way before a fire ball went past my head. It separated and hit each of the afflicted. Morrison got hit with another streak and Seth got up again. “Eva,” Seth started forward, “You will not fight him.” “Shut up, Seth,” she replied, but I heard her voice crack. “Come forward and you won't be harmed,” Seth continued to walk towards us. “Not another step,” Eliot made the ground shake and I leaned against the wall, “Or the ground is having a falling out.” “You don't want to do that,” Seth said then tried to grab Eva. “No,” I opened my eyes and shoved Seth into the wall before he could touch her. “Eva, we have to go,” I told her. “Hold on,” she let her flames disappear and went over to Seth's unconscious body. “Come on, flame girl light the place up,” Max shouted then her expression changed. “Don't tell me what to do,” the fire blasted in every direction. Max grabbed her arm and I led the way through our path. “We'll find you, Eva,” Seth shouted. “If you leave now, Maya they will all be punished,” Dr. Morrison tried to break through the flames, but we were already outside. I closed the door and Caroline covered the door in vines before she collapsed in Eliot's arms. “Carry her,” I ordered and Sara went over to check on a burn Max had while Eva went over to an old Jeep. “Eva,” I caught up with her. “Maya,” she turned around and hugged me, “I lost him, I cannot see him in that body anymore he's gone.” “I know,” I rested my head against her shoulder. “I missed you both so much it hurt,” she sobbed, “You were dead, Seth was a machine and Nora was always with Darren trying to convince him to stop drinking.” “He's already drinking,” I said. “I guess you know,” she said then we all climbed into the vehicle. Sara sat in the back with me and Eva and we sped out of there. Max did the driving while Caroline slept in Eliot's arms. “How did you survive the death serum?” Sara questioned. “I don't know, it worked, but then my visions came back and I just started fighting again,” I shrugged. “Do you want to call Darren yourself or should I?” Eva asked brushing away some tears. “I can't talk to him yet, I'll speak with him when we get there,” I crossed my arms across my chest. “You'll have to talk to him soon though,” she dialled the number and I heard a male voice faintly through the speaker. “Price, we found out who the prisoner was...it was Maya she's alive.” “I am telling the truth she's here in the car, pale blonde hair in curls and bright blue eyes that are narrowed right now,” she sighed and I relaxed my eyes. “Nora will be happy to have some backup,” Sara told me, “She's fighting Darren all the time and she never gets to rest.” “I'll try to help,” I thought about Nora's brother's cobalt blue eyes. “He demands to speak to you,” Eva told me. “Alright,” I took the phone and put it to my ear, “Dare.” “What you did was unforgivable, Garnet,” he said then hung up. “Did he hang up?” Eva took the phone back, “Darren, hello.” “He delivered his message,” I muttered lying my head against the door, “What I did was wrong, I know that now.” “He's just upset, he took it really hard when they announced you were killed by death serum,” Eva put her arm around me, “He still loves you, Maya you just have to promise you'll never do that again.” “It helped most of you escape though,” I argued. “We need you, May if we are ever going to be truly free,” Sara said playing with her phone, “No one knows what to do next, no pressure, but we really need your guidance.” “I am sorry I thought you guys would all be better off without me,” I answered honestly, “Do you have a knife?” “Everyone is wrong at some point in their lives,” Eva said, “Do you want a weapon to protect yourself?” “No, I need to cut this tracker out,” I grabbed her knife and put it to my skin. “Don't do it,” Sara squeezed her eyes shut. “Close yours too,” I looked at Eva then I cut into my skin. There was blood which made me queasy and I used the tip of the knife to pick up the tiny tracker. “It's out,” I threw it out the window. “Your wrist,” Eva grabbed a bag from under the seat, “I forgot how insane you could get at times.” “It needed to be done,” I said and she cleaned my wound, “Ouch.” “Serves you right,” she started stitching it up while Sara filled me in on the last month. “When Jemma and Seth showed up at the fight outside of town, everyone was really upset, but they didn't even seem to recognize us,” she explained. “That's what those injections do to people like us, Sara,” Eva was tense as a board. “We're going right, Maya,” Sara looked to me. “I'll do whatever it takes to get them back,” I nodded. “You do realize Darren isn't going to let you out of his sight from now on,” Eva warned. “He probably hates me,” I hurt at the very thought of my own words. “He might be a little angry, but he'll get over it,” Sara said, “I am going to take a nap.” She fell asleep and then Eva started sobbing again. “Eva,” I pulled her into a hug. “He knows who I am, Maya he told me he wanted me to join him,” she gasped for air, “He is one of them, but I love him I really do and he could still be him inside.” “He has to be,” I stroked her hair, “It's going to be alright.” © 2015 Lorena RoseAuthor's Note
