Sunrise

Sunrise

A Poem by Aliah Mae Ayala Mendoza

We once talked about mornings and how we liked them.
Bringing the scene we've envisioned into our minds.
Suddenly, we felt the morning breeze
Started smelling eggs being fried.
The scent of freshly brewed coffee at our kitchen table.
Hearing the chirping of birds in the distance.
The warmth of the sun.
All comforting and familiar.
Outside is a calm scenery of mountains and trees in the forest.
And a river flows in a picturesque dream.
Seeing your eyes spark like a child's.
Resonating, how intimate that morning was.
As mundane as it is.
Just how could I bid it could happen to us?
But that moment will not come.
We just know that some things will fall.
We will open our eyes one day.
Without each other's arms.
But we'll catch the same sunrise, the same morning in the dreams we shared.
