Warm WordsA Poem by Lauren BurchA homeless family copes.
Ice cold snowflakes
Frozen on brittle eyelashes
No warm coals for our hands tonight
No warm words for our ears
Sleep, young child
Some soup for your aching stomach
No warm bread for our veins tonight
No warm words for our ears
Daddy’s still looking for a job
Momma’s stealing water for our lips
No warm coats for our backs tonight
No warms words for our ears
The lady in the car brought us a sandwich
The man spat on what was left of our shoes
No warm looks for our eyes tonight
No warm words for our ears
We’re still living under the noisy bridge
Catching diseases from the dogs
No warm houses for our family tonight
No warm words for our ears
We’re all holding hands again
Our family against the world
We may be homeless tonight
Six warm words for our ears
At least we have each other
