Privileged

Privileged

A Poem by Joy

Privileged.

They called her privileged,

And she was.

She had the american dream.

A family with a mom, dad, and sister.

She had a little white dog,

A big house,

A nice backyard and play set,

And a white picket fence.

She didn’t know she was privileged,

Until she lost it all.

Everything was taken from her.

Her house,

Her backyard and play set,

Her white picket fence,

Her dog,

And even her dad.

They had nothing.

They lived off of nothing.

Everything was gone,

Except her mom and her sister.

All she needed was love.

It was hard to find love sometimes,

Especially when they were in need of so much.

Milk was a luxury.

Meat, real meat was a luxury,

One that they didn’t get very often.

She only had one friend,

And she was emotionally and physically abusive.

So she had to make due with what she had.

The voices and everything around her became her friends.

Death became her best friend.

She played with him in her darkest times.

He sheltered her,

Distracted her,

And oddly saved her life,

More than once.

He was the only one who was there for her.

Her “imaginary” friends,

As everyone else called them,

Were real.

No one believed her.

They thought she was crazy.

She thought she was crazy.

She was alone with the voices,

And death.

She was no longer privileged,

And she knew it.

Privileged.

That’s what she once was.
