The Stand Alone Soldier

The Stand Alone Soldier

A Poem by Liz Chesters

I tremble and shake

the fear is inside me

war is upon me,

the battle looms.

I am a stand alone soldier

in this fight

just me.

Strategies in place

to tear this apart.

It hurts like hell

worse than hell

and the battle goes on

long into the night

the pain penetrating deep.

But I must fight this alone

because I must learn

how to ride to victory,

no noble steed

no guardian

to guide me through the darkness.

And as victory approaches,

I cannot lose my head

lose sight of my goal.

I know I'm almost there

so I battle on

harder than ever

pushing, punching, kicking

until it's beaten down

and once again I stand tall

bruised but not broken

the victor,

this stand alone soldier.
