This is not a period piece (pun intended).
Some inspiration from The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Yellow Wallpaper
I don't trust psychologists. I never understood what's so therapeutic about a scientist.
I'm weird I'm crazy Only a hysterectomy can save me Maybe I'm over-dramatic about all of this stress Don't blame me It's just my uterus Every complaint Plaguing my brain Has no cure But the allure Of yellow wallpaper syndrome Everyone's a critic Everyone's a physician Diagnosing pain As figments Of feminism
Wow - Yellow Wallpaper syndrome - brilliant name for a condition and the book looks fascinating too (just Googled it there) , I see the point though. Apparently they invent a new mental health disease every so often.
Well written Lizzie. I like your style. :)

i originally wrote this because there are a bunch of people in my life who don't take me seriously when i'm angry because i don't talk much
and instead of asking me what's upsetting me they assume there's no legitimate reason
it's just pms or mood swings because that's how girls are or some bullcrap like that
it makes me question my own sanity at times

Those two lines you added are a good preamble, I feel.
Cool one Lizzy.
The title surely attracted my attention, but the subject is surprising. Not what I expected!

This piece was born of frustration because when I'm upset I always have a reason, but it seems everyone prefers to chalk it up to females being moody emotional creatures. the word "hysteria" was created with that very same concept in mind. It is outdated and disproven, but people still seem to think crazy comes from the uterus.
