Alone in my Heart

Alone in my Heart

A Poem by Joshua Hunter
"

It says it all

"

I sat there in my house, alone

Talking to my shadow

And my shadow talking to me

We were talking about being so alone

When I heard a knock on the door

"Yes? Who is it?" I asked

"It's God, will you let me in?" the voice said

"What God? There is no God! Be gone!" My shadow said

Waiting a few minutes, there was not another knock

So we went back to our conversation

A week later I heard two knocks

"Yes? Who is it?" I asked

"It's God, will you let me in?" The voice said

"What God? There is no God! Be gone!" My shadow said

Waiting a few minutes, there was not another knock

So we went back to our conversation

A week later I heard three knocks

"Yes? Who is it?" I asked

"It's God, will you let me in?" The voice said

"What God? There is no God! Be gone!" My shadow said

Waiting a few minutes, there was not another knock

So we went back to our conversation

A week later I heard four knocks

"Yes? Who is it? I asked

"It's God, will you let me in?" The voice said

"What God? There is no God! Be gone!" My shadow said

"Wait God, don't go!" I said, "Will you not stay this time?"

"My child, I have never left." God answered

What did he mean? I thought

"I've been here since the day you were born." God said

"Liar! You don't care about us!" My shadow spat

I looked at my shadow, not understanding his anger

"I've been here waiting for you to let me in, forever waiting."

"LIAR! Leave us alone! We're fine alone!"

"If I let you in will you fill the hole inside of me?"

"Yes, my child. That is why I'm here, to complete you."

"NO! Be gone! Be gone now!"

"Be quite Shadow! I want Him to stay."

"But we're fine alone! We don't need Him." Shadow said

"No, we're missing something, and I think it's Him." I said

"NO! We don't need Him!" Shadow yelled

"God come in, sit down."

I ignored Shadow's screams of protest

The door opened up and light flooded into the room

Lighting up the dark corners and making everything beautiful

Shadow screamed one last time, disappearing

"Hello my child. I've been waiting for this day."

"I feel… complete, I'm not alone anymore

"The pain… the pains gone too

"And the hole, it's been filled." I said

"Yes, I am with you now, and I'll never leave you."

He looked down and smiled at me, His eyes shining

I knew it was true; He'd never leave me… ever

This is really good, I enjoyed it. I picture the shadow being Satan trying to distract us from letting God within our hearts. Sometimes it is so easy to set God aside but there will come a point in life where we can't stand to be without Him, hopefully. We need to remind each other and ourselves that He is always there we just have to acknowledge Him and listen.

Fabulous! And this hits so close to my heart as I was Agnostic two years ago. But, now as a Christian I have seen God do some amazing things in my life. I read Peace Keepers review and I seen that you were going for the shadow representing Satan. I can see that now after they said it but I pictured the shadow being apart of me. I think you constantly struggle with yourself when it comes to excepting God. So, when the shadow was saying we're fine alone I just kept thinking that was me two years ago, not thinking I needed anything but me, myself and I just struggling through life blind and so unhappy. That's just what I felt but everyone will have their own interpretation and that's what makes poetry so great. There is so much sustenance in your writing, it really makes you think. I applaud you :)

I like Peace Keepers view here, I pictured it myself.
This was a write that had my curiosity get the better of me, and it has left me slightly gobsmacked.
Hmm, something worth pondering.
Well done
