Chapter OneA Chapter by JacquiFrom the moment I saw Cascade High, I knew I wouldn’t like it. Outside of the high school stood a big, obnoxious sign that read “Cascade High, proud Football, Baseball, and Lacrosse champions of 2009.” The first room you reach after entering the buiding was a room called the commons. The was of the commons were filled with all sorts of trophies and medals ranging in every sport, from badminton to football. There was a glass wall at the end furthest from the entrance to the school. Through this wall you could see the courtyard. The courtyard was beautiful and it was located in the center of the school, with the school built in a square around it. In the courtyard there were many trees and bushes. In the middle rested a tall beautiful fountain. There were tons of students all gathered around it all talking and laughing. It wasn’t before long when I was approached by a man. He was a short, chubby man who looked as if his brown hair was beginning to bald. His eyebrows seemed to join at the middle and his dark brown eyes were hidden behind thick, black glasses. He wore a green shirt with brown overalls and seemed very interested in the papers he was holding. “Hello, you must be Kyra” he said, mispronouncing my name. “It’s pronounced Kira, just spelt differently.” I answered. “Ok sorry, please follow me to receive your schedule, Kyra.” He said mispronouncing my name again. As I followed the man he began to talk and introduce himself and the school. “This is Cascade High and I am the principal” he said. “Currently, our sports program is excelling, as you can see.” He pointed proudly at all the honors that hung around the school. He could see I was not impressed and continued boasting about the achievements of the school teams, trying to impress me with all of the accomplishments. As he talked I looked around at the students. It pretty much looked like any of the other high schools I have been to. There were clearly divided into different cliques. There were the Preps, the Jocks, the Wanna-bes, the Goths, the Rich, the Poor, and the Unusual. Then I saw Him through the window. He had long, dark black hair, with crystal blue eyes. I could’ve melted. He sat underneath the fountain, with His head buried in a book and the sun seemed to shine directly on Him. Time had stopped as if it was allowing me to take it all in. At that instant I was instantly in love. Every part of me wanted to go over there and introduce myself, but my legs disobeyed me. They continued to follow the blabbering principal. Just as I sunk back into reality the principal had turned around to look at me. I could tell he was waiting for a response, but since I had not been listening I did not know how to answer. “Hunh?” I said with a distracted look. He seemed aggravated for having to repeat himself as he said, “I said, What do you think of the school so far?” Half distracted, half confused I said slowly “I don’t really know, I just got here.” He seemed disappointed and he led me into his office. He began printing out a piece of paper with his back towards me as I glanced outside again, trying to get one more look at the boy by the fountain. The principal turned around the same time I did and gave me the paper. As he turned around again, he asked me if I needed any help finding my classes, but by the time he turned around I was gone. I started walking towards the courtyard, towards the boy. Just as I was keeping my cool and almost towards him I was hit in the head with a football. I fell to the ground and instantly a few guys ran up to me. Two jocks with huge muscles helped me up and continuously apologized. I looked around for that boy I had seen before. But he was nowhere to be found. I turned my attention to the two boys who were apologizing. “Hi, I’m Chris, and this is River.” He said. Chris had long, shaggy, blonde hair and for a second his blue eyes locked with my creamy brown ones. I quickly looked away and saw River staring at me. River looked completely different than Chris. His dark brown eyes almost blended in with his pupils and his dark brown hair was short and spiked up on his head. River’s tanned skin was much more appealing than Chris’s pale white skin. They both looked at me, waiting for an introduction. After a few seconds of inspecting them I had said “Hi, I’m Kyra and I just moved here from New York City.” Chris seemed impressed. “What is a city girl doing here in the most rural part of Ohio?” he asked. I wasn’t really sure how to answer him. "How would I explain to him who I was running from, what I was running from? He wouldn’t believe me anyway." “Oh, I just wanted to have a little less attention.” I replied. At this River laughed. “What is so funny?” I asked him, very defensively. “Nothing” he started to say. “It’s just that everybody knows everybody else here. You’re the new girl at Cascade High. People are going to wonder, and want to know your life story. Trust me your going to get TONS of attention.” “And judged” Chris added. “Judged?” I questioned them confused. “Well” River explained. “They want to see if your good or bad, and what clique you fit into.” “I have to be labeled?” I asked them. They looked at each other at the same time and then back at me. At the same time they both said “Yes.” “Why? It seems stupid labeling people.” I said confused. “Don’t be offended” River started to say. “Everybody just wants to find out whether you’re a convict or not.” “Yea” Chris added. “Or an Alien.” River joined in “Or a robot!” he had said. The two of them continued naming what paranormal species I could be. If you only knew, I thought. I am more than just the new girl at cascade high. © 2009 JacquiAuthor's Note
