Tower Flight (5)

Tower Flight (5)

A Chapter by Lady Wolf

She pushed herself off the tower, lazily free-falling, putting as much distance between herself and the...gentleman...whose presence she had so abruptly left, before opening her wings. She had intended to simply fly back to the balcony outside her room, but the sound of wings opening behind her changed that. She craned her neck around to look.

‘Damn.’ It wasn't that she didn't like the leader of the king's scouts, whom she also knew was the head of the kings espionage and assassin network. She even admired him for not trusting her. Hell, she somehow managed to wrap everyone else in the castle around her little talon without even trying, which made her more than a little uneasy. She just didn't feel like dealing with his suspicious nature and unending questions at the moment. But he dared follow her. Foolish. Even with her right wing just healed she could still out-fly anything but the legendary Sky Lords; what humans would call a dragon.

Immediately, she tucked her wings back, streamlining her figure as she entered a steep dive, picking up speed. The ground rose up to meet her at, what some would call, an alarming rate, and her eyes streamed with tears before she closed the protective second eyelid. Behind her, she could sense his rising alarm as she refused to pull up, twinned by his resolution to get whatever answers he needed out of her. She turned her attention back to the ground, the risky maneuver she was attempting needing 'split second timing' as the human phrase went. Right before impact with the ground seemed imminent, she snapped her wings open, gritting her teeth as her right wing twinged warningly, slowing down her velocity, and landed hard in a crouch. Before the scout leader could react and land himself, she leaped back up in the air, pushing off from the ground and pumping her wings hard.

Quickly she rose, passing up the still faltering spy. She circled up the tower as she gained altitude, then shot north as he began to rise. She headed toward the giant lake that backed the castle. As soon as she was over deep water, she tucked her wings back, diving toward the lake, lancing through the chilly water. She used her wings to push her further under where she waited, looking up through the surface of the water. She could hold her breath for a full hundred heart beats and used that talent now.

As she watched, the spy passed over her once, twice, then a third time. As her lungs cried for air, she pumped her wings, rushing toward the surface. She gasped deep lung-fulls of air as she looked around for him. Faintly, she could see a lone figure flying toward the castle. Satisfied that she wouldn't be bothered again until tomorrow she dove under the water and began swimming leisurely to shore, her wings working in the water in the same manner as they did in the air. Once in shallow water, she took to the air again, warily flying high above the castle before diving swiftly to her balcony. She landed in a crouch, her wing throbbing angrily. She had definitely over-worked it.

And the cold water didn't help any.’ She shook most of the water out of her fur-scales in a cat-like manner before straightening up and going inside. As she stepped inside her room, a familiar figure rose from a chair beside the fireplace. ‘Damn it!’
