Losing pieces

Losing pieces

A Story by Maggie

It was okay, because he was there. It was okay that it was raining, that the rain drops felt like small pieces of sharp ice piercing through her skin as they came in contact with it. Hair dripping wet, clothes sticking to her skin, now becoming purple from the cold and the rain combined. It was all okay, because she couldn't feel any of it. It was okay,to be standing there in the rain and cold,to feel something besides for the pain that usually filled her body, until it over spilled and then she was left with nothing. Now there was light,a kind of exciting buzzing filling her head. Dizziness and tingly fingers and toes, aching bones and cramped muscles, ready to be used after years of being wasted. She reached out,and almost dug her nails into his skin, she was acting like a child. She felt the warm skin, and the dizziness intensified. Her jaw hurt, her face felt strange. She was smiling. She gripped his wrist, fingers coiled around it,she felt a light thumping beneath her hand. Real,he was real, and he wasn't leaving. Her mouth opened up,and her real self spilled from her lips, her words, telling him thoughts and feelings, painting pictures with her words, what she always did,and he was still there. His pulse, still beneath her fingertips.

Then her arm was gripping nothing. Her fingers slipped through the air and her smile washed off of her face by the rain. The warm skin she felt was gone, along with the dizziness. Her hand lowered down to her side and she clenched her fist. Her nails dug into her palm, and blood dripped from the small cuts. Tears filled her eyes and fell down her cheek, you couldn't notice though, the rain disguised it all. Her heart slowed and her stomach twisted, the cuts continued to bleed and her tears continued to flow. Placing all her happiness and love, trust and hope into one person was a mistake. She always knew it was,she repeated it to herself daily, she made sure to remember that placing everything you ever felt into one human being was insane. It was insane because once they disappeared, those feelings would disappear with them, and she'd be left with nothing, and they always disappeared. Once they found out who she really was, once she trusted them enough to let them in,they'd take a step back and vanish. Just like he did,but she'd never felt like this, not even once.

Now she's back to being someone else. She's there, talking, and laughing, but she's not really there. The person she pretends to be is,and for some reason,it feels like the person she really is,is slowly vanishing, just like he did, just like they always do.
