Spiritual Divorce Part One

Spiritual Divorce Part One

A Chapter by Little Mouse
"

How does one reconcile divorce with religious beliefs?

"

God, I’m tired of my rambling prayer to you
I go on and on and on
I know I need to leave
But the bible tells me no
And he won’t go!

Moses said we could divorce
Due to the hardness of our heart
1st Corinthians states the believer cannot leave
Lest they may save the other’s soul
But if the unbeliever wants to go
It is then you can let them go

And yes, the vows, I remember
Till death do us part
But what if we are slowly killing each other
Yes, with the hardness of our hearts

Well…

Your words from long ago
You knew the world would change
You live in me in this present day
And I believe what you have to say

Ramblings unanswered
I prayed one simple prayer:
“God, you need to make this clear…
Give me something in writing tomorrow! Amen.”

The next day a loaned book returned to me
That I was certain would be gone to this day
“Spiritual” preceding “Divorce” by the author Debbie Ford
Odd title, you wouldn’t think it so
Yet great words of wisdom she shares
I remembered as I drove home

I glanced at the book on the passenger seat
It was then I remembered my prayer
I had received something in writing
And it was the very next day

I finally left and in shines continued clarity
Yet still in spiritual limbo
Not prepared to decree the big fat ugly D!
Just for now, I’m waiting for you or him to somehow set me free.

A rarity here, a theological piece that lives in tension. It is clear that there is a strong faith underlying this, but not a blind faith. All of us who take these things seriously feel this same tension between what is said and what is right. There are no easy solution, just decisions. You make your choice based on your most honest interpretation and hope for the best. I love the ultimatum, something in writing. The irony is that the writing we have (biblical) only clouds the issue sometimes. This is a thought provoking poem.

Jesus told the apostle Paul we are not ruled by law or works we are saved by grace. Our sins are forgive, past present and future if you believe in Jesus and accept him into your heart.

Thats in romans, forgive me for not remembering the verse. Guess you'll have to read the whole chapter. Wouldn't hurt as there are more eye opening scripters in there.

Hope this helps.

wow, this is indeed a gem of a poem. Heartfelt and poignant. So many face this situation with the same questions and like Blue Bard said, sometimes there are only more questions. Well written

I love your title. "Spiritual Divorce." So appropriate since a divorce starts long before it actually happens... in the heart of man. I have a friend in Cali. that recently divorced because her husband was abusing her. She stayed for a long time because the scripture says, "God hate's divorce." I led her to a scripture that also says, "God hates abuse" and He does. I feel sorry for people that stick it out in misery because of the scriptures when they need to be read in context with other scriptures as well and interpreted as a whole. Blessings!

A dilemma for many today. Trapped in an abusive relationship, I finally left for the sake of my children, unable to stay any longer. I'm glad you got a sign; removing that confusion from your heart.

*hugs*

Wow. How come this hasn't been reviewed a million times yet? This is so beautiful. You are for sure devoted to your faith and this piece shows the internal ripping apart of the insides as we try to do what needs to be done... yet struggle with whether it indeed needs to be done or not. I absolutely find this inspiring because those quotes you use from the bible which I do not recall knowing at all before now suddenly hit me like a ton of bricks since I just got off the phone with my other half and we keep having the "ending" conversations because we've been rocky for a while. A very clear distinction regarding who is "allowed" to chose to end the relationship in your quotes above. Well, more fodder going into the back of my brain.... thanks for that! Good luck in these endeavors, and I love the way God answered you. That may be the most special part of this piece, although the whole thing is beauty to me.
This is the most painful verse to me:
And yes, the vows, I remember
Till death do us part
But what if we are slowly killing each other
Yes, with the hardness of our hearts
I can feel the pain and reality in this stanza, it's hitting a little too close to home. : (
