Living Is Punishment

if to release all your guilt

as if you've already paid 

you were made to forget

through a thing they called death

would you call that thing cheating?

the dying, the unremembering.... 

would you call some kinds of living

the only true and fair punishment?

I firmly believe that death can be a peaceful release to some. Living on the other hand can be hell. Yes, living can be a punishment. I can see that. I think of my mum in a nursing home for seven years. She lingers on, has no enjoyment of life and is a fraction of the lovely woman she once was. We all love her dearly, but she is living in hell.

Even though I do want to know what happens after death I wouldn't want to know if I could just in case there is nothing, that consciousness just dissolves into nothing... maybe hell is just nothing.

My father died several years ago with Alzheimer's, I understand what you are going through. That is a type of hell for you.

I would love to believe in heaven, it would make our losses more bearable. Sadly, I think there is nothing after death. The end is the end.

Maybe in that our time is temporary that gives it more purpose, more value, more reason to live it. If you knew you lived forever the terms purpose, value and motivation might change in definition. The definition of consciousness might change. Death might even be a good thing if you live properly.

Honestly still wonder about people I know who have died. Sometimes I hear them say my name, and I feel their presence, but I never know whether it’s just me wishing for that instead though. I want to honour them. Even if they’re not there. But I often wonder about my own purpose, and whether or not existence will have any real meaning other than in the moment. Sometimes you write very deep statements that make me think. Some of what you’ve written inspires what I write.

The word purpose gets weird to me when I think about it too much. The only real purpose now might be to just have a purpose because we've all long forgotten what the original purpose was or what the original purpose was is no longer purposeful at this stage in the evolution of the universe. Anyway, it's probably safe to say that the word purpose as our consciousness currently defines it is probably not the final definition... in 10 million years we won't even be humans anymore, the universe is going to last for tens of thousands of billions of years before the eventual heat death. S**t's going to get weird before then,
