Expectations? You misread this my friend. It's not about getting anything, it's about being something for someone in spite of things. Altruism, even as a tiny version of it, that's what this was about. You failed this test. Very badly.

poetry is not a test. I believe that once we let poems go, the readers see what they see, and if they get something from a piece...that is success...poems are not a riddle to be figured out, they are to be felt and related to by readers...I would never tell a reader that he or she failed...that is not what poetry is about.

Can one ever be sure of what the other wants? Sometimes one does know, yet still wants to hear it from the other. A bit of conflict here David, but nicely put.

Sometimes hearing it is enough, just barely enough. It still remains a little painful though. Such is life I suppose. Still, if that's all there is for me I'd always rather experience it from a distance at the very least than never know it at all under any circumstance.

Sometimes that's selfish. If a person truly cares for another they will recognize that the idealized outcome is not realistic. Happiness to me is a two way street, never a zero sum game.

Indeed. The ideal seldom happens. Too many variables, too few constants in the Universe. Stuff happens. People change and move away. Happiness needs constants, stability, consistency. That’s why so elusive...yet the caring need not cease.
