I like the repetition, I think it adds impact. Also man/hand are half rhymes and that adds value. The title is all important in this short poem and should be read as part of the main text. Great message here. Smoking and drinking can also result in addictions and huge damage to health. Hope all is good with you David. Hello from a very warm UK.

for me.... it's too obvious this one ... hmmm .... kinda like skimming rocks only across the surface to the other side of the river and never allowing it to sink real deep ...

Denial is very human, it helps one keep out of touch with one's tragedy and serves to keeps one afloat, in a dark, airless, bottomless well.

Also the reason why a log in one's eye seems like a speck. It cannot be swallowed as it will choke and cannot be spat out, as it will create a horribly deep void within.

I feel like this could be a modern haiku

I think that in itself would paint a vivid picture, though I do get the repetition, almost like a head shaking.
