and some folks do not

some folks need drugs
more than other folks
think they need drugs 

some folks need drugs
to coax their monsters
back into their boxes

some folks use drugs
to invoke a less obnoxious
version of what's conscious 

some folks need drugs
to dismiss all of the starkness
that comes with their darkness

some folks use drugs
because at their sharpest
they can only be heartless

some folks need drugs
to arouse the subconscious
and become superconscious

some folks take drugs

over splitting headaches

and very broken bones

some folks use drugs

to find the restful places

inside their running minds

and some folks want drugs
because all that they have
is an obession named addiction

so not all who use drugs

do so for good reasons

and not all of the drugs

ever had a good meaning

but all of the users

who are not abusers

should not live with the stigma
that says they are losers

You've tackled this topic brilliantly, your poem wasn't forced with the rhymes, it made complete sense and the message had mass impact. I couldn't agree with your words more and I also have to praise your talent, this was brilliant. I really enjoyed reading this creative and tactful piece this morning.

Thanks mang. I've been reading and hearing from people that medical marijuana is going to ruin society... but most of those very same people who say s**t like that are advocates of anti-depressants, anti-anxiety meds, sleeping pills and vanity garbage like propecia (for hair loss) or Viagra (boner pills). All of those drugs have side effects that are objectively worse than smoking weed. Not too mention the worldwide celebration and taxation of drugs like alcohol and tobacco which also have side effects equal too and usually worse than marijuana.

My cure for depression and insomnia has always been vigorous exercise, writing and then smoking a little herb at the end of the day. It's never made me feel like a zombie like the anti depressant Prozac did or the anti anxiety meds like Xanax did. But the stigma that comes with openly smoking weed has always been far more negative despite it's effectiveness with fewer side effects. That's starting to change though, in the next 10 years marijuana will be decriminalized in the US on a federal level. The "reefer madness" generation is dying out. (sorry mom)

Great message in your words and I am a firm believer in weed being used for medicinal purposes. This is currently very topical in the UK. Children who have constant epilepsy can get much relief and their lives made happier and more bearable. Your poem had impact on this reader. I do not however support drug use for recreational purposes because I believe it can lead to addiction. It is the addiction that bothers me. I have seen the damage that can cause. You cover the topic from many different angles. Well written David.

People are still terrified of giving children extracts from marijuana for any reason. For example, even though the specific substance (CBD) used to treat epilepsy isn't mood altering and doesn't get the user high in anyway there's an irrational stigma that keeps it from being utilized. That's starting to change though, at least in America. The Food and Drug Administration officially approved it as a treatment just a couple weeks ago.

If you don't have a problem with reasonable recreational use of alcohol you shouldn't have a problem with smoking weed for the same reasons. It's far safer and less addictive than alcohol, tobacco and even caffeine. But other drugs like cocaine, heroin, ecstacy, etc.. have such damaging physical effects and such a high potential for abuse even someone that doesn't have an addictive personality could easily develop a problem in a very short amount of time. It's still true that most illegal drugs have no safe recreational application and should always remain illegal.

So, damn....truth be told, I've always believed that we all have our own demons to fight, but the things we use to fight them with are different...hence, different addictions. But in the end, there are some who win the battles and there are some who lose. it's sad i guess, but I never quite blame a person for the 'weapon' they chose to fight their demons with or for losing because you can never really know what one is going through. Thanks for this buddy
