for that one dude pretending to be a war vet... we all know at least one
a coward is one who strikes but is too scared to stay a coward is one who fakes but cannot play a coward is one who shrieks and then runs away a coward is one who talks but remains the flake a coward is one who plays without handshake a coward is one who prays but sins anyway a coward is one who pretends
You have given examples in your poem of those you would define as a coward. Why do some pretend to be people that they aren't? Because they lack courage, they don't have the self esteem or drive to do what it takes. On the whole, I don't hold contempt for people like that, I pity them. They must lead really sad lives to want to be someone else. Whether it is pretending to be a veteran, a doctor, maybe they choose professions which are generally held in deep admiration by the public. These people can cause damage though. Your example of one who fakes, but can not play. I have seen many fakes in my life. I think there is a little bit of coward in us all. As a kid, I played knock down ginger, knocking on peoples doors with friends and running away so I didn't have to face the consequences. My own definition would be someone who hurts someone in a road traffic accident and then flees the scene with no thought for the person he has hurt. Or maybe someone who leaves their partner because their partner has a serious illness, and they can't handle it. Your words are always thought provoking, and these are my random thoughts before my breakfast cup of tea.

Knock down ginger... ha, we call it ding dong ditching over here in the states. Knock down ginger sounds funnier. Next time I get a chance I'm going to have use that phrase.
Thanks for your review, they are always astute and thought provoking.
We are all cowards in one way or another depending on our reaction to circumstances. But some more than others so much so that they keep up a constant pretence .
Someone I knew always said he was in Viet Nam. It turned out he was never even on the front lines. He has since died, more than likely in shame. I don't know anyone who pretends to be a vet but anyone who says they were when they weren't is a disgrace to all men and women who served and saw the horrors of war firsthand.
On a side note: Some so-called permanently injured men even get houses donated to them and they've been seen not only walking but moving furniture.

How do you know that?

I gave him every opportunity on several different occasions to answer any of these questions... he couldn't answer a single one. That's how I know that. With any of that information you, specifically... name, rank, dates of entry and of discharge... you can verify if someone served or not through the freedom of information act as every veterans basic service record is public information.

Even though he blocks me I can still subscribe to his writing and he has to see that. He likes to unblock me to leave nasty comments and then immediately block me again from time to time, actually just last night he did this in these two poem's comment sections --- http://www.writerscafe.org/writing/listofdemands/2006976/ http://www.writerscafe.org/writing/listofdemands/2006453/
It's kinda the main reason why I wrote this one last night.
I know someone just like this too. I can sense this kind a mile away and I like to stay away.
I wonder what faking gets them and which part of them is gratified by that. Or if they are just dead in all their parts.
Afterall, at the end of the day, one has to undress and look at oneself, whether they like it or not, so can they stomach the repulsiveness? I wonder.
Appreciated the subtle rhyming in the poem. The concluding lines are very good.

I think faking things comes from a severe inferiority complex with a touch of self loathing. Some people can't stand themselves but refuse to admit it so they make up their own reality to hide behind. Some people do this so much that they start to believe their own lies. A lady who pretended to be an African American named Rachel Dolezal comes to mind... she pretended so hard and changed every aspect of her life that she started to believe her own bullshit and eventually took it way too far. When she got exposed she was vilified not just by the black community but also by every single other ethnic demographic that she alienated trying to "pass" as black. Her life is completely ruined all because she couldn't accept who she really is. We all have parts of ourselves that we dislike but the cost for abandoning your true identity far outweighs any benefits pretending to be something you're not brings.
