But you can always "regift" an unwanted present and move along. I've been to the edge of the empty...there was nothing there...no inspiration...no will to live. I don't know anything about luck having never personally experienced any. I know too much about underappreciated hard work and sacrifice though. But...I wouldn't change that...it just means I understand love. Every day is "thanksgiving" around here...we are all happy to still be alive to face another day.The best gifts are free...friendship, love and freedom. But although they are free to have, they are expensive to maintain. That takes hard work, integrity, sacrifice, responsibility and sometimes requires a life in the process. We don't stand much on celebration of holidays in my family...but we do celebrate each other every day. I earned hugs today for painting a little girl's fingernails...and I didn't ask for payment. Sometimes the rewards are worth more than the effort put in to them and that's what makes life, to me, worthwhile.

"...earned hugs today for painting a little girl's fingernails... and I didn't ask for payment." That one cracked me up. Seriously though, who are these little girl's who's fingernails you would normally charge money to paint? Are you randomly painting children's fingernails in the streets? You best be careful, a parent might consider that suspicious potential pederast behavior and crack you over the head with golf club. By the way, everybody alive today is somewhat lucky to exist in a conscious way given that everything we've seen in the universe thus far seems to be inhospitable and environmentally violent. If you can't luck in that I suggest you look closer and be more appreciative of the things you do have, for example you said, "everyday is 'thanksgiving'", if you truly mean that then you would be one of the luckiest people on the planet. Or are you just spouting off some 'peace, love, and harmony' vanity nonsense because you think it sounds deep and meaningful? And just a fyi, this poem wasn't really about Christmas presents or holidays at all. The last line was just a bit of humor. It's really about fake sentiments and empty casual politeness most people share with others in order to impress a fake perception upon someone else. I see a lot of standard politeness as just customary bull s**t we do out of tradition but it's really just empty sentiments and surface gestures.

It must make for a bitter existence to be so cynical of the basest human courtesies. And I would say bitter because it certainly isn't socially endearing. As for myself I abide by my state's motto taken from Cicero's essay on friendship, "Esse Quam Videri" translated as, "To be, rather than to seem." What you call, "luck" I deem providence; another free gift that had a price to be paid from the Giver but cannot be bought by the recipient. You use profanity to exalt your sense of honesty and integrity but to me, profanity shows a marked lack of intelligence in the failure to articulate without commonly used vulgarity. Profanity or vulgarity may both have a place but more often they are used to produce what you term, " a fake perception" from someone who is fearful of life and trying to look tough...like a teen thrown into a jail cell for the first time. Or a puffed up little egotist who is swallowed up with his own fascination of himself. As for the little girl, it was my toddler daughter. I have a 33 year old daughter who has three college degrees and a three year old learning to read. I'm just looking forward to my next grandchild due in January. Also, looking forward to seeing my eldest who is flying in from Texas with her military husband for Thanksgiving and bringing my granddaughter with them. I don't know what the term, "surface gestures" means but it sounds like it most likely stemmed from superficial observation. I think most things have a bit more depth that might be extracted through careful observation. But perhaps that just comes from living and the multitude of life experience that goes along with it. Cheers.

Popular nomenclature is like a beacon for the blind that fall in lockstep with whatever movement is promoted at the moment. If it requires critical thinking, true involvement, or educating themselves on an issue, they couldn’t be less bothered. They are like beggars dressed in sequins with a cup full of words that have no value. It breeds apathy and stoicism.

But I don't believe it's on the individual nearly as much as it's on the culture. Western society is designed to be surface orientated and appeal to the largest common denominator while still maintaining a productive economy. I b***h about it constantly but if everyone was constantly thinking critically and "educating" themselves I believe that's what would breed true apathy and stoicism, not the shiny group-entertainment based morality we all share or the faux intellectual vanity games we play with each other (for example: the vast majority of writing on site's like these, to include mine). Compassion and empathy in my opinion does not increase with raw intelligence and strict critical thought. I would argue that compassionate traits are muted even further under those circumstances. See: The Nazis, Communism, pretty much any book about a dystopian future. . . Ninteen Eight-Four is a fine example in literature of what happens when the intellectual elites who "know what's best" base an entire society off of a sterile brand of "critical thinking" and "knowing what's best for the common man" and the "greater good" of mankind overall. Holidays are an example of some surface nonsense allergic to critical thinking but so very important to social/familial solidarity. Your observation's are only half way there, your cynicism denies you the entire picture - that most of the world is stupid, and to vilify that would be to condemn vast subsets of the human race... like the Nazis.

Maybe, because of my focus, just now, is on testing how much one can say with fewer and fewer words, these longer works tend to be opposite to my present aim... but certainly worth reading. Flitting back and fore - should I look for much more? ~ Perhaps time'll tell!

The world will always have the "hipsters" who want to be cool for standing up for something...or kneeling in some cases. Yet if you ask simply why....you get a cookie cutter meaningless answer.
