Perhaps, its something akin to multiple personality syndrome? Like switching on the internet and turning on another persona. One they actually believe in. Otherwise, it baffles one what gratification faking can bring. Way too creepy. (The pic is hilarious. Great art choice)

I think it's more of severe inferiority complex. They think so little of who they really are that they must create a completely made up version of themselves. I look at it as if they are playing a crazy kind of role playing game but pretending it's real. The true lunatics actually convince themselves it all truly is real.
