Black is the Absence of Color

Black is the Absence of Color

A Poem by Davidgeo
"

"

black is the absence of color

as one is the loneliest number

this language our precious advantage

these games the living example

that killing joke our conflict incarnate

against me, against you

against the world

white is the presence of all color

many is the strength of our fathers

meaning is how words become binding

games remain our precious advantage

bright flags wrapped in trivia

in cloth and hopeless denials

would you die for this?

would you kill viciously for that?

to make a superior point...

of judgement and murder

back to black

and one

the loneliest number

against you

against me

a world of advantage

and vicious evolution

she never had any pity

not for you

not for me

there is only advantage

until the end of all death

there will be struggle

until our very last breath

there will be fight

till all greatness ends

and all is back to black

Firstly, the music video was appropriate for this delightful concept of black. This has set me off on a Amy Winehouse marathon. It saddens me that she is no longer with us, but she did leave quite a legacy behind. But I digress.

Color symbolism is simple and complex depending on perception. Artists view "black" as the blend of all colors of the spectrum which differs from the writer's; this is the "dark." The speaker depicts this color as absent of all color instead. I can see where this is coming from especially when I think in terms of light. Without light, black is all we see. Opposition is a common theme throughout this piece. In contrast, "white" is depicted as encompassing color; this is the "light." The introduction to black and white then delves into a monologue about human nature; it is cruel and kind.

Overall, "black" is associated with death while "white" portrays life. Despite positive and negative, there is a glimmer of grey. Goodness has pride depicted in the following line, "...to make a superior point." Self righteousness is apart of life as well. The writer concludes that death is a viable solution. Thank you for sharing!

I liked the contrast, and as a color artist, I actually had to research some of the theories behind your piece to help bring clarity to the definitions and deficits of my personal understanding. Very well done!
