The S**t, the Spinster and the Perfect Woman

The S**t, the Spinster and the Perfect Woman

A Poem by LisaButterfly

I am afraid
Of being alone
I feel like an outsider
Being a spinster

You are going to end up like your cousin in Italy
She's a spinster

You are such an angel
You are so calm
So gentle
So nice

The structures of society leave women on a duality
The Madonna or the W***e
Can we be both or more?

I am under the threat of being labelled unmarried
My body clock is ticking
If she isn't married or doesn't have children
She has failed for being a women

Am I wrong for not being married
There is something that happened

She is s**t
She is sexy but not too sexy
The word s**t segrates women from men
It separates women from women
It dehumanises
S**t, Spinster and Perfect
Intimate women
Pass along the control
Keep women caged

the wife and courtesan.

ociety‟s restrictions caused women to hide their
true selves and “assume an artificial cha
racter”

Here, she argues that men, as the dominant
figures who influence society‟s beliefs and actions, both create and reinforce this image of
womanhood, forcing
women into molds
into which they do not fit
.
omen are supposed to be
very calm generally; but women
feel just as men fee

Aging will steal your looks and will make you invisible, for
if a woman is not looked at, who is she?

How resonant! This feels real. I love how conceding to vulnerability allows you to discuss this subject without sounding like a staunch feminist. Haunting.
