Chapter FifteenA Chapter by Jess: ~The Sidekick~
Looking around the room to find the source of the noise, she didn’t see anything besides Mel leaning against the sink laughing. She heard Jared cursing under his breath behind the counter and trying to suppress laughter. He was failing terribly and just burst out in laughter. “What the hell did you do?” She had a hint of sarcasm to her voice. Mel just looked at her and started laughing harder. She pointed at Jared and tried to talk but couldn’t get it quite right. She caught her breath and her face was deep red, scarlet, from the laughter. “He busted his a*s coming down off the counter because he didn’t listen to me.” “Hey! I’m not the one who was spraying water.” “I’m confused. Why were you on the counter and why was water being sprayed?” She looked at the both of them. “I was standing on the counter because the light over top of it needed a new bulb and it was easier than getting a chair.” He glanced at Mel, “She was spraying water because she’s a smartass, who better realize that paybacks are a b***h.” “Okay… I think I missed something that makes it as funny as you two thought it was.” “No, he just went to hop down and slipped on the water on the floor that I warned him about and busted his a*s on the floor. It was funny because right before he slipped he was trying to tell me he was going to ‘hurt me’ and then he hurt himself.” She looked at Jared and stuck her tongue out and almost started laughing again. “Oh the irony.” Sara said. “Tell me about it,” he shook his head, “I’m going to get you back for that Mel.” “Uh-huh. I’ll be waiting.” Sara got up and started to walk into the kitchen. She wasn’t even going to bother with phone calls tonight. “You two can’t be left alone anywhere, can you?” “Nope.” Sitting at the table, she laid her head down and just looked at them. Her phone buzzed again. She had a voicemail. Oh, joy. Taking her cell out of her pocket, she saw who’d called and wasn’t happy. “Damnit.” “What’s up?” Jared asked. “Josh called me, I don’t know how he got my number, but he called me.” “Why?” This from Mel, every last bit of laughter was out of her voice. “I don’t know. I haven’t checked the voicemail yet. I probably shouldn’t.” “Then don’t.” “No, I’m going to. I want to find out what the hell he wants.” She called her voicemail and put the phone on speaker so everyone could hear. It wasn’t what they had anticipated. “Sara? Um, it’s Josh. Listen, I’m sorry about your house. I told the kids to scare you, but that’s a little more than scaring. I need to see Mel. I’ll give her some cash to give you for paint or whatever. I’ll meet you at your club tonight at 10:30.” “Okay why’s he being so nice?” Sara asked, suspiciously. “Mood swing, maybe he’s PMSing.” This from Jared. “I’m going to go meet him. Maybe he’ll leave me alone afterward. I’m sure he’ll just want his stuff back or whatnot.” “Well, it’s,” she glanced at the clock, “almost ten now. We might as well get going and get there a little before he does. We can wait in the car.” “Car?” Jared asked. He had a truck. “Yeah, car, I’m driving.” Sara said. “Why you?” “If Josh gets there and your SUV is there, he’s going think Mel didn’t come alone. He didn’t specify, but if that’s what he wanted, I don’t want to piss him off. He knows she can drive my car.” Jared and Mel agreed that was best and they all went out to the car and left. They arrived in less than the five minutes it took when they went to Jared’s house. At the club, they pulled around and Sara parked in her usual spot. No one was there yet. “I hope he’s not late like always. I want to go to bed.” “Just take a nap while we’re in the car babe. Jared or I will wake you up when he gets here. Either that or Josh will by being an a*s.” “True.” Mel wiggled around in the seat until she was comfortable and closed her eyes. “Why don’t I just switch spots with Jared? It’d be smarter to lay in the backseat.” Sara shrugged. “You can do that if you want.” With that, they switched spots and Jared and Sara were starting a conversation of their own. Something to get their minds off this problem. © 2008 Jess: ~The Sidekick~ |
