Chapter Five

Chapter Five

A Chapter by Jess: ~The Sidekick~

Sara pulled up to her house ten minutes later, she’d calmed down enough not to speed all the way home.  Getting out of the car, something ran down her spine and made her shiver.  Looking around, she couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary, so she proceeded to go inside.  Then, she knew what happen.  Sara burst through the door and ran into the house.  Melanie where are you!

“Mel?” she was barely louder than a whisper.  She checked the kitchen.  Nothing.  She checked the living room and dining room.  Nothing.  Slowly, she walked down the hall, carefully choosing her steps so nothing squeaked and she wasn’t heard, making her way for the master bedroom.  Door’s closed.  Good sign…  I think.  “Mel?” a little louder this time.  Still no answer, Damnit where are you?  She pushed the door open slowly; Mel was nowhere to be seen.  Suddenly the bathroom door opened, Sara jumped, and half fell into the footboard of the bed.

“Sara?  You okay?”  It was Mel.

She was in the bathroom, that’s why she didn’t hear me.  Damn, don’t you feel stupid?

“Er… Yeah.  I’m fine,” she managed to ramble out.  “Has Josh been here?  At all?”

“Um… No, why?  What happened?” she looked slightly alarmed.

Sara climbed onto the bed; she wasn’t in the mood for standing… or for using any energy whatsoever.

“Well, he came to the club, and… yeah.  Told me pretty much the exact same thing as what he told you, nothing much.  I don’t know why I was so spooked…” she looked up at her friend.

“Hm… is that all?  You’re sure?” skeptical Mel.

“Uh-huh.”  Sara kicked off her shoes, laid down, and hid under the covers and her pillow.  What a day, what a damn day.

“Okay.”  She’d decided to take her word for it.

After a few minutes of doing something or another, Mel climbed on the bed, under the covers, and rubbed Sara’s back.  It was soothing and Mel knew it.  Sara was thankful to have someone that she could confide into for everything.

“Oh, if you want, tonight you can come out to the club with me.  VooDoo Blue is playing.  I’ll pay your way in.”  Sara offered.

“Okay honey, thank you.”  Mel wrapped her arm around her and slid closer.

“What were you doing before you got into bed if you weren’t getting clothes on, hmm?” she laughed.

“I was taking the towel off, geez… and drying my hair.  I figured you wouldn’t want your pillows and sheets soaked from my hair.”  She pinched Sara’s butt.

“Hey!  Okay.  I understand.  You are hot and bothered aren’t you?” she smirked.

“I didn’t only get the shower because I was dirty.”  She winked.

“Oh you’re indefatigable.”  She kissed her friend’s cheek and checked the time.  It was only 3:00 but it seemed like there was nothing left of the day, Sara sighed.  Rolling over to look at Mel, she remembered that her friend could read her like a book.

“So what’s wrong?”  Mel made eye contact.

“Do you really want to know?”

“Uh, yeah?  I asked didn’t I?”  She was being a smartass, Sara hoped.

She rolled onto her back and peered into her eyes, or the distorted reflection of them in the mirror above.  She always thought it seemed like it was floating instead of being affixed to the ceiling.

            “Josh stopped at the club.”

“What’d he want?”  Mel stared into her reflection.

“What do you think he wanted?”  Sara and Mel knew she knew, but didn’t want to say it aloud.  Saying it out loud was like summoning the dead or something.

“S**t.  I’m sorry babe.  I’ll talk to him… or something.”  It was Mel’s turn to sigh.

“Don’t worry about it.  It’s not like me being shaky and jumpy is new.  He only put an edge to it.  A damn rough one, but only an edge.”

“But still, he had no right to—” Sara cut her off:

“Yes, he kinda did.  Besides, it’s fine.  I told him if he didn’t leave, I’d help him do so.  He left on his own… it was all hunky dory.”  She hoped Mel wouldn’t notice she’d left out the part about him threatening her.  She was staring into Sara’s actual eyes now, not merely a reflection of them.  Several moments passed.

“Okay… if that’s what you think…”  Mel trailed off.

“It is…  I’m fine, and I don’t want you to get hurt over something stupid.”

They both went quiet for a long while, just looking at their reflections.

“So,” Sara broke the silence, it was nagging at her, “you’re coming to the club tonight?  As I said earlier, VooDoo Blue is playing live.  You like them don’t you?”  She knew damn well Melanie loved them, but just wanted to start conversation.

“Mhm…  You know I do.  I’ll be there.”

“You’re damn right you will be, I’m your escort.”  She smiled slightly and Mel smiled back.  Things were almost back to normal again.  Almost.  At least, Sara hoped they were.

Sara wanted release, but Melanie was there, so she slept.  Usually at times like this, where she was so upset or distraught she couldn’t think straight, she’d cut.  A few lines at most, she controlled herself.  Nevertheless, when Mel was around, she didn’t do it period.  Melanie was excitable in this area, but who could blame her?  She’d almost lost her best friend.

Your dialogue is good. You keep up a quick back and forth that follows real conversations so it isn't hard to hear them speaking. I like the way your characters love eachother. Its so cute.

Where is the reason Sarah is angry? I think something is missing here...
