Chapter Three

Chapter Three

A Chapter by Jess: ~The Sidekick~

Now it was two years later, Mel and Sara were still best friends, there were no more doctor visits, nor antidepressants, boyfriends and girlfriends had come and gone with the time. However, more cuts had come and healed. Sara dropped her hand to her side and climbed into bed. Her eyes found the mirror, as they did every night, when she lay down for bed. As she looked into her distorted reflection, the pang of loneliness struck again. She wished Mel was there, rolled onto her side, and fell asleep.
Sara was huddled into the backseat of a Chevy Avalanche, all of a sudden there was a crash, and the car was airborne. Screaming, she groped at her fathers shoulder, but he didnt respond. He didnt seem to hear her screams either. He was unconscious. There was a flash and the car slowed tremendously, the seatbelt snapped, Sara flew forward. Just before her face met the seat, she woke up. Screaming, tears running down her face, she shot up out of bed. It was the first time this dream had haunted her sleep in months. Sara tried to calm herself down and it wasnt working. All she wanted was her razor. No. I cant do that to Mel again, she thought. Searching for the phone, she tried to find her bearings. She found the phone just as she was about to lose what little will she had. She dialed Cmon babe, please answer please
Someone picked up the phone HHello?
Mel, I need you, please
Who? Oh god! Sara? What she sounded tired.
The dream I Its back.
But I thought
it stopped? Yeah, me too Sara trailed off.
Mel, I need you, please
Yeah, Ill be right there sweetie. Mel sounded awake now.
Hun, if its too early, I can wait.
Sara its almost 5:00 am, Id have to get up anyway. She paused.
Ill see you soon baby girl.
Thank you, Mel.
Sara was exhausted, but wanted Mel to be there before she went back to sleep, she was the best person to be around at this time. She was consoling, kind Just then a knock on the bedroom door broke Saras thoughts. She shot up out of bed for the second time and looked at the door hesitantly. She hadnt expected Mel for at least another five to ten minutes.
The sight of Mel coming through the doorway was calming. She looked like she had just woken up, but her cherubic face was warm and soothing. As she crossed the room she kicked off her flip-flops and ascended the steps to the bed.
Hey, honey. She said calmly, as she climbed onto the bed and under the sheets.
Hi Sara practically threw herself onto her companion and immediately started crying again. Mel wrapped her arms around her and held her comfortingly.
Shh, babe, its okay, its okay
It went further, the dream did
What happened? Mel ran her fingers through a length of Saras hair and wiped her tears away, grasped her hand and squeezed gently.
It wasnt much, but enough Sara didnt see Mel nod, but she felt it. If it werent for Mel Id be dead
We broke through the wall, went airborne, everything went to slow motion. He was unconscious, the seatbelt broke, and I almost flew into the seat when I woke. She was shaking.
Well, I can see why that scared the s**t out of you Instinctively glancing up, Mel saw the shattered mirror. She always felt like it was going to fall and impale her. It was silly, she knew that, but she couldnt help it.
Sara sensed it, If you want to know, just ask me Mel.
I do, just waiting for--- she felt the gauze on Saras arm and tensed slightly.
Dont worry, Im fine. She pulled her forearm from under the sheets. In the faint light from the sunrise, Mel could see that it wasnt like the first time. She nodded.
Not giving time for a response, Sara began to tell her long-kept secret.
It was the first night I slept here alone, as you know. I was in my original room sleeping. Mel looked into Saras glistening sapphire blue eyes. But you dont know that it was also one of the first nights I had the dream. It was terrible, but I guess I gradually got used to it. When I woke up I was scared, I totally panicked. I ran down the hall to this room, looking for dad. She looked into Mels loving eyes, tears swelled.
Its okay baby Mel kissed Saras forehead reassuringly.
Of course, he wasnt here. I saw myself in the mirror, I dont know what I was thinking, probably that I was pathetic. I grabbed the nearest thing dads paperweight and threw it at the mirror. Next thing I know, Im lying on the floor, shard of mirror in hand, and dragging it across my tummy and wrists she sighed.
And that is? she motioned upward.
When I got home from the hospital, I gathered all of the larger and medium pieces, and then cleaned the rest up. That night, I assembled them on a piece of lauan that Id painted black to blend with the ceiling. Now its secured there. Even the piece I used. She looked down at her hands.
But, why?
To remind me never to do it again, like I promised you.
Is it working? she looked at her own hands, as if ashamed for asking.
Sara nodded and wept a little more, burying her face into Mels chest. She squeaked out, I love you, Mel.
I love you, too. She comforted Sara as shed done many times before.
Once she had herself together, she looked up, Thank you, Melanie.
Youre very welcome, Sara. Mel flashed one of her smiles that could take the pale out of a person on their deathbed.
I didnt expect to see you so soon, or so good looking. Sara managed a smile.
Oh, should I go and come back later, looking like s**t, with more clothes on. She grinned. I came in a hurry, you sounded terrified.
No! Hell no! she held onto Mels waist, not letting go.
Okay then. She said while giggling.

Sara thought she mustve been awake, and pulled on her little satin camisole and matching short-shorts. However, she could tell Mels hair was untouched. It laid perfectly around her face. It too, like Saras, was black, but it differed in the fact that it had hot pink tips and no purple highlights. Her hazel eyes reflected perfectly. Mels bodice was much like her own, but she was five-five, and had a little more weight, she wasnt fat, but average for her height. To sum it all up, she was hot.
Sara glanced at the clock, 6:00 am. Hey babe, did you just wanna crash here for the rest of the night? She knew damn well Mel didnt have to wake up early, and she didnt have to wake up for another hour and a half.
Yeah, thatd be nice, babe, thanks. She rolled over to face Sara and smiled.
Sara smiled back, Oh my god! I cant believe I almost forgot to tell you.
Tell me what? Mel asked curiously.
Sara stuck out her tongue, in it was a barbell that said, Eat Me on the little red ball, Got it repierced!
You didnt tell me?! You little b***h! Mel yelled, jokingly. Im surprised I didnt see it, or hear it for that matter, you always played with it.
Sara giggled, Im not. We had other things to talk about, and besides, its kinda dark in here.
Yes very true, it is dark, just how we like it. She smiled teasingly.
Sara gasped overdramatically, Oh Mel, dont do that! You know what it does to me! she grinned.
Uh-huh, precisely!
Sara clicked her tongue. Tsk, tsk, youre bad.
Maybe, but Im good at it. Mel grinned.
So thats why you came so quickly! Sara scoffed. Arent I loved? Although, she made it more of a statement then a question. Wait, what about Josh?
Oh, hes in the mountains Mel trailed off. Josh was Mels boyfriend of thirteen months. He knew about Sara, and he was okay with it. Mel had explained that they thought it was better to be friends with benefits, rather than a couple. He had nothing to worry about between them.
As Sara looked at Mel, she could sense that something else was going on. When Mel was upset or worried, she developed a telltale expression. It was present now. Sara lay there and looked into her friends eyes in silence for several minutes before either spoke. It was Mel whod broken the silence and she looked worried.
I dont think he and I are going to last much longer. She gave a deep sigh.
But why? Hun I dont und Sara was awestricken.
His mind has changed about you and me. He says he doesnt want me messing around with you now. Im not sure why, but he doesnt even like the idea of me talking to you. Its so weird.
Sara looked at Mel with an open mouth and an expression like someone had just hit her in the face. I I dont why wow. Im sorry babes she trailed off.
Dont be; I knew itd happen sooner or later, Im prepared.
What are you gonna do?
Im not giving you up, Josh can kiss my a*s. Ive known you too long, and weve been through too much s**t to do that. The girl managed a smile.
Mel, Im touched. Wow, you know, I love ya babe. Have I ever told you that? Cause I do, so much. Sara leaned over and wrapped her arms around Mel, hugging her and kissing her.
Yes, youve told me, I love ya too. She returned the gestures. Then held onto Saras hand and looked at the mirror, Sara joined her.
Stealing another glance at the clock, Sara saw it was 7:00 am; she had to be up and moving in half an hour. It looked like she wouldnt be getting any more sleep tonight, oh well, she thought, and looked up at her distorted reflection next to Mels. This was how Sara had seen herself ever since the night shed broken that mirror. Sure, she had other mirrors, unbroken mirrors, but she felt like a stranger in them. Its never gonna be the same. She whispered.
I know. I dont have a problem with that. Mel answered in a whisper.
As long as you dont, I dont.
Mel nodded and Sara smiled.

Maybe a seperation of the dream from the actual story some how... then again maybe not. It is still REALLY well written. I like how your character pleads. You can hear the desperation in her voice simply by reading the words you use and the way you use them. Your flirtatious banter is adorable and very teenage so it fits well. Again a good dramatization. Very dramatic and angsty. Cute little punker goth girls.
