Unity

Unity

A Poem by Linda Marie Van Tassell

Can I hold you tightly next to my heart
that no matter what, in all that you do,
you will remember this love is true,
I hold you higher than the highest blue,
that when night comes the day will rise anew;
and I will find myself embraced by you,
being one together, never apart?

Can I kiss you, taste you, upon my lips
like sweet strawberries in the summer rain,
like tender petals flowering again,
like moist dew-drop kisses across the plain
where windwhirls whisper their lyrical strain
across the golden sheafs of wheat and grain,
touching the world with fluid fingertips?

Can I remember and never forget
that sparkling twinkle within your eye,
the way your tears fall whenever you cry,
the gentle intake of your heart-felt sigh,
or the way your voice seems to sanctify
all the deep devotions that underlie
the man that I have known since first we met?

Can I embrace all your dreams and desires,
the whimsical notions that come to play,
the threads of illusion that never sway,
the wishes that bud like flowers in May,
the sheer loveliness of your heart's bouquet,
and all the blossoms as I turn to pray
in front of the soft light of blazing fires?

Can I gaze into the pearl of your face,
which is illumed in such delicate light,
to trace my love, the ineffable sight
that brings my gladness and silent delight,
to touch the moon with its beauty so bright
that it radiates, sweetly, fills the night
with song, a sweet voice that dances in space?

Can I soar within the clouds of your eyes,
to weep and rain down our love to the land,
to wash ashore like waves upon the sand,
to nurture the flowers' delicate strand,
to express how much I cherish you, and
love you like none other can understand,
as endless as the span of blue-born skies?

Can I capture but a moment in time,
untouched by another with tender care,
to wear it like a smile, your own smile wear,
like sunlight and moonlight upon your hair,
like a soft, sweet mouth kissing through the air
to kiss your sweet lips which are waiting there
like a dream once again found in this rhyme?

Can I close my eyes and find you within
like some song for my dear heart to compose,
like some sweet affection, a precious rose
that blossoms in silence though no one knows,
like a passionate fire, which softly glows
and contains the heart while its flames enclose
all the secrets that lie beneath the skin?

This union is a promise born divine,
the bright sun of beauty for all to see,
a marvelous beauty destined to be
like the wind, the rain, or the cypress tree,
the waters that hunger to find the sea,
like an ocean of love inside of me
because my heart is yours and yours is mine.

About
Poetry has been my passion since I was about fifteen years old, and I love the structure of rhyme and meter moreso than just randomly throwing words upon a page without any form whatsoever. Whi.. more..
