A Silent Song

A Silent Song

A Poem by Linda Marie Van Tassell
"

Measure of pain and cocktails of rain.

"

I have been neglected and abused -

abused, abandoned, and left alone,

alone with naught but desperate thoughts,

thoughts of turning my heart into stone.

Stone-stilled silence of a waning moon.

Moon shining over desolate lea,

lea of longing and praying for love.

Love never once laid hands upon me.

Me in the muted voice of the heart.

Heart in a song of fractured measure.

Measure of pain and cocktails of rain.

Rain-riven years my only treasure.

Treasure the silent song of my soul,

soul song grafted from shadow and bone,

bone-backed memories tangled in weeds.

Weeds now forgotten - overgrown.

Overgrown meadows, blossoms bereft,

bereft of life where snowfall glistens,

glistens of tears and half-wasted years.

Years of songs to which no one listens.

This has such dream crushing sadness woven between the lines. It makes the reader want to shout no to the darkness of intent; to fight off the dragons of depression and to rescue the fair maiden from the moment. What can I say, I often suffer from White Knight syndrome. (laughing) Well, I hope my comment may cheer up the author a bit, at least.

This heartfelt poem is very sad, and I'm sure many of us can relate to this gruesome moo in the silence of your heart, now and then....feeling abandoned... heart like stone.... no love to be found anywhere...trapped in the bosom of your heart; unable to release; neglected and abused lives within one for a long time (I work with neglected and abused kids).... re mains in their souls; memorizes tangles in weeds, lost and forgotten..... A very harrowing feeling I get, and you have created a stunning piece on this mood... thank you for sharing Linda

The sadness in this poem is something I can relate to, though not in the same fashion I don't think. Life takes us on different paths. your opening lines prepare the reader for what is to come. But besides the message of love not felt or found and the dark loneliness of this piece what I grabbed onto was how each line began with the last word of the previous line. In your poetry I have learned to look for these subtle creative touches and I just find that so appealing to me. Not to mention I come in this morning, click on your page and find 3 new poems I have not read yet. It feels a bit like Christmas morning. : )
And if I can say...the melodies of your poetry, the cadence, how each line dances with the previous and the next...simply amazing work. )Can you tell I am a fan?)

I love the touch of music you added!. And the way you portray loneliness is very well written with the imagery. The use of nature is something I also lean on to when describing difficult topics so I'm very fond of it. My favorite overall theme is I like how you describe the narrator's longing for love that they haven't received.

Brimful of beautiful references to the natural environment which always pleases me, but this one line

Love never once laid hands upon me.

That is a heartbreaker truly. Your first two lines say why. Such depth of emotion.

Your review brought tears to my eyes. You are very perceptive. Thank you.
If music is the food of the soul, then poetry must be the banquet of life. I am immersed in the enormity and caliber of your every line. The measure of pain and cocktails of rain. Simply exquisite, Linda!
