goblin goldfish

goblin goldfish

A Poem by Donald Meikle

june tenth and Saturday night
The pool temp is eighty eight
The fishpond's a theatre
Of gobbling goldfish
Under the sputtering flickering bug light
A feeding frenzied delight
As mosquitoes fall out of flight
There's the hint of a breeze
caressing bare knees
Under starry skies hidden by clouds
Chorusing crickets and frogs are competing
In rhythm to insective death
Successive Kamikazi crackelling
Drowning out natural sounds of the night
Clearing the air for a midnight swim
Of bugfree refreshing and cooling delight

Ok... ya got me chuckling.

a good mind's eye view of summer charm and "bloodlust"... that must have been one wicked bug-light!

It was, and we can't find another one like it!

such a loss... such a loss!
Reminds me of when I had the swimming pool some time ago. Those midnight swims were awesome...without the bugs of course. Valentine

What a brilliant affinity for nature you show here, it really gives us an idea of who you are as a person. You can really bring this natures scenes to life. I especially liked:

'a feeding frenzy delight
as mosquitos fall out of flight'

and:

'chorusing crickets and frogs are competing
in rhythm to instinctive death'.

There is such masterful sound, inner-rhyme, alliteration, all your trademarks. It's a great poem!
