Holding wonder

Holding wonder

A Story by Donald Meikle

I saw a child holding wonder today
The loading dock doors were both open
As I entered the post office proper
The swinging doors were propped open with bags of mail
The lights were out and in the shaded daylight
I watched every eye staring at the ceiling
A humming bird had been there for about a half hour
Trying frantically to escape through the ceiling lights
I took a mirror and reflect sunlight
Through the open doors onto the ceiling
The post master climbed a stepladder and reaching up
Caught her with both hands
He carefully climbed down the ladder
Walked to the outer doors
And leaning far out opened his hands
For a moment nothing happened
And then the bird flew away
In that moment I saw a child holding wonder
Some days are better than others
