Why

Why

A Poem by Donald Meikle

Why

My life quest

Since reason came

To prod me

When

During an air raid

reading

by candle light

Where

in the back yard shelter

What

sorry I'm deaf

and my glasses are dirty

or

empty

That

I can fix

Now

I guess it's like the why of any of our lives. Those things that make us us. The stories that lead up to the now and when put together make up the whole painting but when looked at separately don't make as much sense. I like the way the details of the air raid and shelter add weight to the poem. Like how someone's annoying habit can seem a lot less annoying when we know why it's an essential part of who they are. Good short poem.
