Tramp O'lean

Tramp O'lean

A Poem by Donald Meikle

This nest building is so much fun.

That torn twisted grass root looks perfect

That witch grass is the nicest length

I wish that weed would dry out quicker

I chewed the root ends three days ago

Spider webs are so easily plucked

That poison ivy is great once it breaks

Those flat rocks

And those square boulders

All those tree trunks

All the same size

That river's full of clay

She smiled at me today

Maybe there is a way

Spring dances invitingly

Blooming ahead of humming birds

Sucking sap sunward

Greening everywhere

Tickling fancies

This.is.my.kind.of.poem! How wonderful to imagine you wandering, noticing all those wonderful mentions, imagination working ovetime yet gently, the happy melding of sight and language. Each and every phrase is wonderful!

this is lovely Donald, a real celebration of hard-earned spring

I just recently read The Boxcar Children with my kids, and this reminds me so much of the nostalgia of that story, how children might live in the woods; keep house with sticks and stones and bits of salvaged dishes. Of course, your title and 'maybe there is a way' kind of puts a damper on the idea of it being some kind of romantic notion of living in the woods. But, maybe the point could be more that- beauty can still touch even when the steeliness of life keeps a man at arms length from comfort. Or, maybe I'm thinking too hard. Whatever, I like it.

Love this:
Spring dances invitingly
Blooming ahead of humming birds
Sucking sap sunward
Greening everywhere

Ha. I love this piece, written with a Scouse eye-pen, without doubt. I love the insert of the Spring-fed wishful thinking...."She smiled at me today/Maybe there is a way" and the last two lines "Greening everywhere/Tickling fancies" Super, Don. P.
