First My Soul, Then My Voice

First My Soul, Then My Voice

A Poem by lilypad

which will break?

first my soul, then my voice

i wait outside the door and hear laughter

the good kind, this time

for a second, i see my reflection

in all of them standing together

until i remind myself not to be too hopeful

i meet all of them, wishing to be in their frames

but there’s been a change of plans, they say

CRAACK.

first my soul, then my voice

it’s just a small scratch

they wouldn’t see it unless they held me to the light

my voice is the last thing that should be shaking right now, but it is

by the time i’m done, the shards have made a mess on the floor

i know they see it now

i close the door before letting myself completely shatter

i tell myself it’s for the better

it was too loud for something this fragile

i like being stained glass

but sometimes i wish i was bulletproof like them

both my soul, and my voice
