Chapter 1
(15 yrs. later)
"Come on Ari you have to come to the opening of the new club! I hear it's going to be insane Please you can't make me go by myself!"
Her best friend Jess was begging. Jess's real name was Jessamine but she hated it so she always went by Jess. She had been friends with Jess ever since kindergarten where they bonded over a box of crayons. From that moment on they had been inseparable.
" I just don't think my grandmother will let me go. Plus I have nothing to wear."
Which wasn't necessarily true in fact it wasn't true at all her grandmother had just bought her a whole new set of designer clothes. But she favored shopping in vintage shops the real ones not the fakes they had in SOHO. Ari had never been fond of Dolce and Gabbana and other famous designers like the snobby girls that attended her school. Much to her grandmother's dismay she just couldn't find the intense desire to wear clothes that charged by sizes.
"Ariella, will you live a little you spend all your time reading latin classics. Studying human nature and the lives of other people. When are you going to start living your life." Her words stung, but she knew they were true. Ever since her parents passed away she had shut her self from the world.
"Maybe I have to go I'll talk to you later" I said flagging down a cab.
"Okay but promise me you'll think about it." her voice stern
"Promise" I muttered as I slid into the cab. "Corner of 5th Ave please" I mumbled to the cabbie as I slid in my head phones. "
"RIght away Miss" he responded
I looked out the window and watched blurred faces pass me by
Everyone walking down the street seemed so happy with their lives so, so complete.
"Miss" the cabbie said
"Yes?" I answered absent-mindedly
"We have arrived" he replied gently
"huh" my mind was completely blank
" We are here" he said patient
"Oh thank you" I said my face flushing as I handed him a couple twenties.
"excuse miss" he called as I closed the taxi's door
"You payed me way too much" his face was sheepish
"It's ok keep the change because I certainly don't need it" I replied thinking of my beautiful loft and bloated bank accounts.
"That's very kind of you miss, but i cant accept this"
"Oh, yes you can and you will" I said teasingly. I was having fun aside from Jess I didn't really interact with other people. Not since well never mind.
"Here" he said handing me two cards. One stated his name: Willy and his phone number. "If You ever need a ride or anything call me" The other card had a picture of an angel named Gabriel.
Huh he looks really familiar. I thought to myself
"He's a guardian angel" Willy said.
"Really that's pretty cool" I replied not knowing what else to say.
"Yea, you know they're all around us..." he didn't finish because as he was getting into his dispatcher called saying that some celebrity was drugged out and in dire need of a private cab.
" I will see you later Miss duty calls" he said smiling
"Bye Willy" I called as he drove away. A sudden rush of cold air hit my face and I shivered. Time to go inside.
I kept looking at the picture as I walked towards he elevator. Then I had the feeling that someone was watching me. I looked up and saw a really cute guy with blonde curls he grinned and I stupidly smiled back. Just then the elevator doors opened and I reluctantly stepped inside. But as the elevator rose to the top floor I found myself forgetting all about guardian angels and the blonde guy.
After what seemed like eternity the elevator stopped at the final floor: Home.
I walked down the hall which only held one door, my door and pushed the door open. People rarely came to visit or loiter that we didn't find it necessary to lock the door, well unless both of us went out of town but once again that was a rare occasion.
I pushed the heavy door open and walked in dumping my bag and coat next on a convenient table.
"Grandma I'm home" I called out into the empty loft as I walked into to the kitchen that looked like it belonged in a five star restaurant . Personally I though it was a huge waste of money, neither her grandma nor I knew how to cook. The one time her grandma attempted to cook she had almost burned down the loft. I grinned at the memory while I opened the fridge and hunted for food until I finally found what I was looking for. Cookie Dough my choice of junk food. Thankful that Antonio our chef and close friend remembered to make some before he left for the weekend. As I grabbed the container a note fell off:
Ari, dont eat to much you'll make yourself sick like last time (: By the way your grandmother told me to inform you that she will be in Milan for a some time but should be back before thanksgiving. She wishes you well and will call later to check up on you.
Love Antonio
I sighed abandoned once again well at least I would be nag free for a while and I wouldn't have to show her the math test I flunked. Before long I was already in the comfort of my room. My room was the only thing that really represented me in the entire apartment filled with chic vintage parapheniia the single thing that was out of place was my closet which was the size of a McDonalds filled to the brim with name brands and high end designs. The only thing I truly loved about my room was the window that took up most of the wall it framed a spectacular view of central park and its various wonders. I stood there for a while taking in the beautiful tress with their autumn leaves gracefully drifting through the wind like butterflies. The ponds shimmering in the fading daylight. Every time I look at it I feel as if this view reminded her of a beautiful place. Yet every time I tried to remember where this mystery place was or what the name of was I was left with an excrutiating headache and more questions than answers. My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by my phone vibrating angrily in my pocket.
NEW TEXT MESSAGE FROM JESS
So R U. COMING?! Come on evry1 will be there. PLZ
Defeated and lonely I texted back
SURE... MEET U @ 10
After sending the text I realized all my clothing (which had all been thrown on the ground) were missing. "D****t" Rosita must have taken all my clothing to the cleaners, and Mr. Chim always closed on fridays. Then the little voice in the back of my head (the more high maintenance one) retorted " Well it's not like you dont own anymore clothes...." My eyes suddenly wander towards the closet door " Oh shut up" I told the little voice but found that my feet were already leading me forward to my closet. I began strolling through the racks and wincing at the prices that ranged from $150-$5,000. Walking through the racks I had the feeling I was in a high end boutique. A silver bag at the very back of the closet caught my eye it looked like it had been there a while and was already collecting much dust. I dusted it off coughing as I shook off what seemed like years of dust from its exterior and unzipped it carefully. I let out a little breath of surprise as I saw what was inside.
A little while later...…
After really primping for the first time in quite some time Jess called to say she was on her way up to her loft. "Geez" I thought I look different but before I had time to regret what I had done and change Jess was banging at her door "Vamanos, its go time gurly."
"I'm coming " I called out grabbing my old coat and pulling it on as I ran out the door.
