Fairy TalesA Poem by Veenot all fairy tales have happy endingsYou were the Pied Piper playing a blissful tune, wearing those bright tights. You promised salvation to a useless child. Drowning, drowning, drowning. A child no more. A rat. Sneering, touching, pulling. Drowning. I am the victim, or you are the hero, or I am the evil, or you are the murderer, thief. You were Peter Pan, appearing as shadow, climbing through the window as I slept. You asked for a kiss, I offered a thimble. A peace offering, or a deterrent. You offer magic, or parlour tricks. Fairy dust, or oats with sprinkles in them. You take my hand, and push. Fly. Fall. You'll never grow up. Lost boy. Murderer. Thief. You were Pan, and I was Syrinx. Your compliments never stopped. Beautiful. Lonely. You need me. I need you. Running, running, running. You reach me, hand outstretched, fingers close to my dress, or is it a nightgown, or am I naked? I am me no more, a cattail, a weed, a rotting thing left in the water. You will never leave me alone, my music is too beautiful. Or is it a scream? You fashion an instrument from my body and play me forever. Where is my peace? Hero. Lost boy. God. Murderer. Thief. Give me back my girlhood.
