keep up

keep up

A Poem by J. C. Alvares

In vain, ashamed,
We pretend.
“Smile!”
(I’m hurting.)
The pain…Don’t share,
Don’t spread,
Keep going,
Heads up.
“Step back!”
Don’t move,
Don’t try,
Stay put.
Water,
Some wine,
The poison this time.
(Dying.)
I’m falling behind…
(Please keep going.)
Struggling,
Fighting…
Leaving the living,
No more pretending.
In rest,
“I’ll be fine, I swear”:
In peace,
as breathing is fading,
I’m feeling at last.
