EXT. - Urban Sidewalk - Early Afternoon

Splash
Panel: Tall boy with hair hanging down over his eyes and in a pony
tail walking slowly down the sidewalk. Wearing a long-sleeved shirt
and jean pants, Josh holds his bookbag over one shoulder. The sun is
gleaming down.

NARRATION

Hi. That
loser right there is Josh. Though I doubt you care, not many people
do.

»Page 2:
Ext. - Urban Sidewalk - Early Afternoon

PAGE
SETUP- Long panel on top, then two panels stacked on left side of
page, with a larger panel filling up the right side.

Panel 1:
Side view of sidewalk and Josh walking along it. Lengthened panel
across top.

NARRATION

And
that's not a bad thing. Most people care about themselves and their
well-being more then each other.

NARRATION

It's
simple instinct. 'We thrive to survive', as some would say.

Panel 2:
Small square panel. Close-up of Josh's foot stopping, kicking up a
small bit of dirt cloud.

NARRATION

Although...

Panel 3:
Another small box panel. Shows Josh stopped and standing completely
still, face still looking slightly lowered.

NARRATION

There's
still that small feeling inside you whispering, 'That can't be
right...'

Panel 4:
larger panel. Angle from above looking down and Josh is looking up
into the sky with a bit of a squint. He has round glasses on the
bridge of his nose and his hair blows slightly to the side.

NARRATION

Oh! By
the way, I am Josh.

Chapter
#1

EXT. - SCHOOL GATES - Early Afternoon

PAGE
SETUP- Large panel on top with four equally smaller panels
underneath.

Panel
1: Josh standing in front of the large open gates and the monstrous
rich school of LarkeAnthony North High School. It's sort of like
a giant castle, flags waving and school kids in uniforms walking
around the grounds.

NARRATION

And
this is my first day at Larke Anthony
North High School.

Panel 2:
Josh walking by a group of people chatting away. They're somewhat
whited out.

NARRATION

New
school, new people, new experience...

NARRATION

...yet
I'm not interested in making a name for myself; for the bad or good.

Panel 3:
Josh walking through the halls, more students conversing at lockers.
A couple walking past him holding hands.

NARRATION

I'm not
interested in getting in the midst of things. It's seems like too
much of a hassle.

Panel 4:
close-up of Josh holding up a piece of paper with a few class
listings on it in his hand and looking up at a sign in front of a
classroom reading, "Advanced Chemistry".

NARRATION

And at
the same time I feel like I need something to happen...

Panel 5:
Josh giving out a puff of sigh, facing the doorway as his hand is on
the door handle.

NARRATION

I want to
know what it means to be, and why...

»Page 4:
Int. - Classroom - Early Afternoon

PAGE
SETUP- Large panel against the top left page, surrounded by three box
panels down the right and one small box underneath the tall panel.

Panel 1:
Josh is facing into the open classroom where students are sitting at
desks and the teaching is halfway through a lecture when he is
startled to see Josh at the door. Strange compound models are lining
the classroom.

NARRATION

...am I
here?

Panel
2: Josh sits at his desk in the far back corner, placing his
bookbag ontop and sorting
through his books. (SFX: shuffling of books and papers)

Panel 3:
Josh staring out the window as he drums his pencil against the desk.
His head leaning on his free hand and his mind wandering.

NARRATION

Maybe I'm
being too philosophical about it. But I'm having a hard time
understanding what it is

NARRATION

That I'm
SUPPOSED to do. Or if I'm actually meant to do anything!

Panel 4:
Josh surprised by a piece of paper being passed back to him as he was
taken away from day dreaming.

Panel 5:
Joshing looking down at a full sheet of questions as it is a breaking
in quiz to the class.

across bottom.

Panel 1:
Shows zoom out of Josh sitting in his corner while all the other
students are flabbergasted by the surprise quiz, especially on their
first day of school.

NARRATION

Maybe
we're all being tested to see who will be the strongest...

Male
Classmate

Aww Maan...

Female
Classmate

On our
first day? Really??

Panel 2:
Front view of Josh beginning his writing in the answers to the
questions as the teacher tells them to start the test.

Teacher

You may
begin now. I will correct these at the end of class today.

Panel 3:
Josh is sitting up as he places his pencil down at the top of his
desk, as he returns his gaze to the window. His teacher is looking
over at him with a shocked expression on his face. All the other
students are busy answering questions. One boy is scratching his head
furiously.

NARRATION

But if
that were so, why are teachers helping students to succeed?

Panel 4:
The bell rings and the teacher is wide-eyed at the answers on Josh's
quiz. Josh is already packing up his things to leave. (SFX:
RIIINNNGG)

NARRATION

Shouldn't
they being wanting them to fail so that they can win? No, that's not
it...

Panel 5:
Elongated panel of Josh walking away and out of the classroom as the
quiz sits on his desk with a perfect score marked on it. Most of the
other kids are getting ready to go too.

NARRATION

...Maybe
I'm over-thinking this. I should just go with the flow.

Shows the inside of the cafeteria where large circular tables are
gathered around and groups of students sitting at different ones. The
lunch line is off to the left.

Panel 4:
Josh sitting down at an empty table, placing his food tray on top of
it.

NARRATION

So if
we're not here to test one another, why do we try to hurt people?

Panel 5:
Josh is eating with a spoon in his mouth, still in deep thought.
There's some sort of commotion going on off to the left and sounds
are reaching over him. (SFX: soft clattering and laughing)

NARRATION

Like with
spreading rumors and slander against each other...

Panel 6:
Josh placing his silverware down and getting slightly irritated with
the noise as it gets louder. An angry mark is on his forehead and an
eyebrow is raised as his eyes are closed.

NARRATION

Or like
with war...

(SFX: Brrrriiinnngg)

NARRATION

Well, no
matter. I'm thinking too much about this again.

Panel 2:
Josh walking down the hall, his hands in his pocket and his bookbag
slung over one shoulder. He's hunched, looking at the floor as he
walks by all these other grayed out students.

NARRATION

Just need
to get through the day like usual.

Panel 3:
Josh is sitting in class looking bored and resting his head on his
hand. He looks at nothing in particular.

his mouth while his gaze is distracted to outside the window to his
left.

NARRATION

But let's
say...

Panel 2:
Overlooking Josh's right shoulder, out through the window and into
the courtyard. Extended view until focus is only on butterfly.

NARRATION

This
scene here. Am I meant to ignore it and miss the beauty that is
presented out there?

NARRATION

Or should
I bask in the moment and leave behind my worries of future
evaluations and tests...

Panel 3:
Surprised look on Josh as he looks down at his paper that's being
taken away by teacher next to his desk. Surprise lines and hands up
in shock.

NARRATION

Crap!

TEACHER

Time's
up! Turn in tests!

Panel 2: Has a speech bubble half way through the first panel and into this panel as it shows Chris finally speaking up. He's leaned back, arms draped over the chairs next to him, his leg resting on his other in a very lax position. He smirks wryly as his cigar simmers in his left hand.

CHRIS

Let's take him to the field.

Panel 3: Shows camera angle viewing over Chris's shoulder down the isle way. Eric looks nervous and exclaiming while Zack jumps up in his seat, fist raised. Josh looks puzzled, still looking at Chris bewildered.
