A War Story

A War Story

A Poem by EdenHarper
"

this poem is dedicated to the courageous men and women who have given their lives to protect the freedom so many take for granted today.

"

Steady drumbeat pounding

Columns of marching feet

Each one in turn sounding

Appearance not very neat

Dragged down by packs and guns

Thinking of home behind

The blood is cold that runs

As muskets are aligned

Deafening roar of fire

Reload and aim to shoot

Every moment so dire

Plant feet like a root

No time to look around

To see if friends are fine

No ammo to be found

No bullets in a line

Grab a gun from the dirt

From a fallen brother

Stains of blood on your shirt

Whisper prayers for the others

It happened in a blink

A searing rush of pain

To your knees you sink

And as it starts to rain

You look up in the sky,

Your work on earth is done

In peaceful rest you lie

Through the rain shines sun

You hear distant shouts of war

But your adventure holds more.
