Response to D. Hubbard's "Mother"

Response to D. Hubbard's "Mother"

A Poem by Libby McKeown

O Mother,

so quiet in her need.

I can hear your laughter

in my own,

and am reminded

of your lessons

Time only shall unveil.

You are the Monolith

by which all truth is tested.

I am the poetry of your heart;

I cannot fail.

O Mother,

It is no light thing

to straighten a man's shoulders.

It is no small thing

to tie shoes.

Pieces like these leave me speechless, as I savour their taste in silence. This is an excellent write to Mother Libby. It is one of the best pieces I have ever read or seen as a tribute to mother. There is a simplicity and honesty here that is astounding! You write very well, you must know that.

Best regards,
Vincent

Libby,
I am not sure when you wrote this poem, but I thank you for recognizing and embracing the sentiment and emotion in "Mother." I was worn out! Thank you for always seeing the best in me and understanding me when I didn't even understand myself. You have such wisdom. You have a gift. It is a rarity to be able to say so much with so few words. Thank you for hearing me in "Mother." I am not sure anyone else did:))

The best poems are personal but inclusive, this poem is a brilliant example. Kudos.

"It is no small thing

To little kids, it's a huge thing. They can't do it yet.
This was quietly powerful.

Being a motherless one, who always wondered what having a mother was until I became one myself and saw it from the other side, I find this to be a wonderful description that perhaps, had I read it years ago, I would have understood... Lovely.
