Ugly

Ugly

A Poem by Lexi Richard

With pen and ink
I can turn
my pain to poetry
I can write
that what you did
was love not misery

I can lie
and say you loved
with kisses and never fists
I can say
my heart is fine
without bruises or slits

I can lie
that you were sweet
fluent with flattery
I can say
that I never ached
because of your cruelty

I can say
so many words
like tulips and daffodils
I can say
you had sugary words
even though they killed

I liked the structure of this poem as well as the message. Could some symbolism have been wrought from a trilogy of "I can lie" against "I can say" suggesting to the reader "I lie, lie, lie"?

Haha thank you!
It's sad how poetry allows you to lie, and nobody will know it. You can hide behind words, hide behind so many things, but know that you can never hide away from your heart. Excellently written.

Thank you!
I liked this one Lexi. I began was thinking that there was too much repitition of the term 'I can say' but on reflection I was wrong.
'bruises or slits' rushed a little I felt, but thats me reading I think.
'sugary words' the same - what about the two syllable 'sugared' maybe.
Brilliant twist on the very end - didnt see that coming - I enjoyed this

I can definitely see where you're coming from, and I'll considered revising. Thank you!
the irony throughout, the paradoxes.....really good....love your wordplay and your use of slant rhyme mixed in.

this is a really good read, lexi.

I honestly can't help but fall in love with this piece. Very powerful and your word choice is astounding "fluent with flattery" nothing short of genius.
