Don't you dare fall in love

Don't you dare fall in love

A Poem by Lexi Kaitlyn

I came home smelling like rain, cigaret smoke and teenage love.
My mother grabbed me and said, "Don't you dare fall in love."
I smiled and stuck my hand in my back pocket and touched the note you had hidden in my jeans, where you said I was the sun and you were 22 degrees fahrenheit and I could melt you with my fingertips.
And I came home smelling like vanilla vodka and the lavender flowers you had stuck behind my ear, the smudged lipstick on my lips.
My mother noticed the way your tshirt hung off of me and was inside out, she brushed the hair out of my eyes and said "Darling, don't you dare fall in love."
And I kissed her cheek and tried to fix the necklace you gave me last night.
The clasp was broken but I twirled the chains around my fingers.
I came home smelling like thunder storms, cheap vodka that made me throw up blood and rose thorns, smudged makeup dripped down my face and my mother just looked at me and knew it was too late.
