The dark wasn’t giving any comfort in the thought that she was safe. Cold damp air swept around her as she shivered at the side of the sidewalk.
“Just a few more weeks. I’ll be safe then.”
Melina looked from left to right. There was so much danger. Anyone of those cars driving by could be an agent, ready to shoot her or worse.
Then she saw a police car. They were likely to ask questions.
What are you doing out this late, young lady? Are you ok? Want to come downtown with us?
She could imagine more questions that she would refuse to answer. Without another thought, Melina got up from the sidewalk and rushed in an alley. Why did she have to live like this?
Normally, she would be in her mansion, being pampered by maids and servants. This was not what she expected her life to end up like. Her parents were out of the city-as usual. She didn’t know what was happening to them but hoped that they would come home before something really bad happened to her. Then they could all move to London, like she always wanted.
Melina stiffened when she heard voices at the entrance of the alley. She walked down far enough to stare straight at the dead end. They were walking towards her, but telling by how slow they were going, they didn’t exactly see her. Quickly, she threw herself behind a trashcan. It acquired to her that the metal tin could become her new home. That thought shot her gut, giving her a bad feeling. As she suspected, they were agents. Getting closer and closer, with their flashlights held in their hand. Now they were close enough to hear.
“I know I saw something run down here! Did you see it?”
The other agent shook her head.
“No, James. I didn’t see anything. Maybe you were just imagining things again,” she said, with a trace of annoyance in her voice.
He ignored her.
The young girl stopped breathing as she felt them walking towards the trash can. She tied her wavy dark brown hair back so they wouldn’t see it. Melina stood still, paralyzed. They were right at the trashcan. Then she heard a chuckle from the man.
“See? What did I tell you, Lisa?”
He kicked the can to the side, revealing the frightened girl. She stopped herself from shaking. Time to be brave. She took a deep breath. The agents watched as her cheeks expanded the size of two soccer balls. They were about to grab her, when the air was pushed out of her mouth and sent them flying back. Melina took that chance to run. Her athletic legs carried her fast, even with the four inch heeled shoes. Like an idiot, she looked back at them and ran straight into the dead end, forgetting it was there. She fell straight on the ground. The agents were up by then and approached her again. Lisa kicked her side, making a black mark on her yellow mini-dress.
“Ooops!” Lisa said, chuckling. “How clumsy can you get?”
James was laughing his head off like a Hyena. He picked her up, with ease, and swung her over his shoulder.
“Hmm...that girl must be some rich brat,” Lisa said, staring at the gold heart shaped necklace lying on her bronze skin. Lisa picked it up then tore it off Melina’s neck.
“She won’t be needing this.”
Lisa grinned and stuffed the necklace in her pocket. James rolled his eyes.
“Better hope she doesn’t catch you with that on. You’ll be blown across the halls!” he said, with an exaggerated laugh.
Lisa joined him. They reached a black van and dumped her in the back seat.
“Welcome to a world of horror, little rich girl,” James muttered.
