When I Close my Eyes

When I Close my Eyes

A Poem by Dan Hermann

Spectre of the past,
who haunts my waking dreams.
Your presence chills
my enflamed soul.
Cooling its fall into Hell.
As if to be some great
Ironic
Joke.

Though you are not seen
I have watched you watching me.
You judging my prejudice,
then condeming a fool.
Ignorant to the world,
and to you.

Fate's eternal jester,
anchored to my every breath.
Nightly rearranging the pieces to an impossible puzzle.
Creating, and recreating your twisted joke of me.
A joke without meaning.
Without a punchline.
Without purpose.

Spectre of the past,
who has slowly killed the warmth of my heart.
Revel in your glory
as I plot my revenge.
Forever determined to watch you suffer
as my ageless victim.

I cast you to the terror of my mind,
so bare witness the world of ruin you've created for yourself.
Where warmth and compassion have no place for you.
Where your screams will forever echo
Within my blissful parody
of romance
and joy.
